"Fox & Rat" Virtual Series - Season Nine

Review By: Emma Keturah

"We are now in a world where the yesterday we knew, won’t ever be the tomorrow we can expect." - Knowle

After the long hiatus FRVS is back and it's better than ever. The edge-of-your-seat drama continues as we pick up where we left off with Camp Lejeune being obliterated by the alien forces.

With colonization underway it is every man for himself and our favourite Super Buddies need to be brave and resourceful to survive.

Grandmama Reyes gives Monica a treasured and powerful gift as her health steadily declines. Meanwhile Mulder, Krycek and Marita pass the time in the bunker, unaware of the chaos above them.

If this is the standard for the entire season, then we're in for one hell of a ride!

FADE IN:

SPACE

Earth sits alone in the vast emptiness of space. A small craft, light in color, floats towards the planet.

MONICA (V.O.)
They came billions of years ago
to destroy our planet and all
existing life on it.

DISSOLVE TO:

EARTH – BILLIONS OF YEARS AGO

Early man fight to survive in the extreme heat of their planet. A large, dark, alien craft hovers over them.

MONICA (V.O.)
Regulating the Earth’s temperature by
creating extreme heat that early man
could not survive.

The small, light colored craft comes down towards the larger dark colored craft.

MONICA (V.O.)
But man was not left alone to die.
Help from friendly beings came to
protect their neighboring planet,
having heard Earth’s desperate cry for help.

The two alien crafts start to fight against one another with their high tech weapons.

MONICA (V.O.)
A battle between light and darkness
began, lasting several years. Ending
when darkness, in their numerous numbers,
over powered and destroyed Earth’s
neighboring allies who came to help.

The large, dark craft blows the small, light craft out of the sky. The craft’s pieces scatter for years over the Earth’s surface.

MONICA (V.O.)
The end seemed inevitable until the
Earth fought back, creating the
Ice Age that only the strongest
of early man could survive.

Snow and ice cover the Earth, weakening the hostile alien race.

MONICA (V.O.)
Man grew stronger and fought off
the remaining hostile alien race.
(beat) Earth once again became ours.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO – JULY 1947

An alien craft crashes down to Earth.

MONICA (V.O.)
They came again in 1947 to learn
our Earth, discover her weaknesses
so they could plan their take over again.

Military vehicles drive up to the craft as an alien exits.

MONICA (V.O.)
But their research ended abruptly,
and ours began. Studying this unknown
alien race, never knowing what happened
between them and us billions of years ago.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. SYNDICATE MEETING ROOM – 1985

The Cigarette-Smoking Man, the Well-Manicured Man, John Montgomery, and the other Syndicate Elders sit in a room being addressed by a man known as Strughold.

MONICA (V.O.)
Decades later a single alien came,
calling himself Strughold, claiming
to be a traitor to his kind. Secrets
were told. Secrets of the plan for alien
colonization and the virus created to kill us.

Strughold hands a small vile to John Montgomery.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. THE STRUGHOLD RESEARCH FACILITY – NEW YORK

NOVEMBER 14, 2004

John Montgomery turns around to face Monica. He approaches her with a syringe filled with the alien virus. He tightens the restraints on her, not knowing for sure what will happen to her. Monica’s body starts to shake uncontrollably. Montgomery does nothing as he watches the virus infect her and her body naturally fight it off, just as he had theorized.

MONICA (V.O.)
Twenty years later, human research
of the virus comes to an end with
a discovery of a vaccine to save
the human race found within myself.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. MARINE BARRACKS – CAMP LEJEUNE, NORTH CAROLINA

MAY 13, 2006
PRESENT DAY

11:00 PM

Knowle Rohrer and Walter Skinner rush into Knowle’s Hummer and speed away from the barracks, just as an alien craft hovers above the building. A bright light shoots down on the building and blows it away. Killing everyone inside.

MONICA (V.O.)
Time will only tell if the years
of sacrifice will work in our defense.
(beat) But has time work against us?
Was the vaccine found too late? (beat)
Will it even matter when their violent
attacks begin?

INT. KNOWLE ROHRER’S HUMMER – CON’T

Knowle drives the hell out of there with determination never before seen as he makes his way north to Alexandria to get Monica and Dana out of harms way.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. GRANDMAMA REYES’S HOME – NIGHT

CHIHAUHAU, MEXICO
8:01 PM, LOCAL TIME

Monica gazes up at the stars above, her gut telling her Earth is not at peace. She looks out over the deep canyon and can see for miles. Nothing seems out of place, yet the air is still, silent, more so than ever before.

MONICA (V.O.)
The second war between light
and darkness falls upon us
once again...

Monica starts to turn away from the cliff’s edge, carrying a bucket with her.

Suddenly, visions enter her mind.

VISION FLASH:

Cities on fire, buildings collapsing, screams for help, chaos in the streets, mass panic, everyone out for themselves, sacrifice of those who wish to survive, screams of pain and death. Then silence as her mind’s eye sees what remains after destruction. Death. Fire. Then nothing.

A sudden scream of pain flashes in her mind as a man covered in blood and dirt rips the flesh off of another human.

Monica blinks her eyes and the visions are gone. She stops walking, not sure what to think of what she just saw.

Toby, Grandmama’s mule, makes a noise from his pen where Grandmama keeps him during the night. Monica looks over at him and makes her way to him with the bucket in her hands.

Toby comes over to Monica with sadness in his eyes. Monica dumps the bucket of food in the trough. Toby nudges her shoulder with his head and Monica rubs her hand on his nose, feeling his sadness.

MONICA
She’s going to a better place, Toby.

She kisses Toby on his head and walks away, heading back into Grandmama’s home.

INT. GRANDMAMA’S HOME – CON’T

Monica sets the bucket down on the ground and makes her way over to Grandmama’s bedroom to see how she is doing. Brad comes out, stopping her from going in. He can’t hide his expression from her, Grandmama is nearing her end.

MONICA
How is she?

Brad looks back at Grandmama, then back at Monica. He takes her gently by the arm and leads her away from the bedroom door.

BRAD
(soft)
She’s weakening.

Monica looks over to Grandmama’s room. Tears sting her eyes.

BRAD
(soft)
She wants to talk to you. (beat)
It’ll be the last time-

Monica cuts him off by gasping out a cry, unable to control her emotions. She shakes her head “no”, unable to accept this is the end.

Brad wraps his arms around her and holds her, knowing how much this hurts her. Monica is close to her Grandmama, more so than any other person in her life.

BRAD
(soft)
I know...

He kisses the top of her head as Monica regains control of her emotions. She pulls away from him and wipes her tears away.

MONICA
I need to talk to her.

Brad nods his and Monica goes into Grandmama’s room.

INT. GRANDMAMA’S ROOM – CON’T

Monica stops for a second in the doorway in shock of her Grandmama’s decline in health. Just a few minutes ago she was looking stronger. How can this decline in her health be happening so quickly?

She approaches her Grandmama. She is pale and weak. Monica sees Death lingering all over her like a black cloud. She kneels down at the bedside and takes hold of her hand, knowing this is the last time she will ever talk with her. Tears fill her eyes, threatening to fall.

How can this be the end? She can’t imagine her life without her, even though she knows death is as much a part of life as the first time you breath air. It’s inevitable.

GRANDMAMA REYES
(weak)
Do not be sad, Monica. Death is just
as much a part of life as breathing air.

Monica smiles at her Grandmama. She knows her thoughts so well.

GRANDMAMA REYES
(weak)
I have lived so much life. I’m an
old woman, you know. (beat) I choose
to go now, at this time, because I
do not wish to see this beautiful Earth destroyed.

MONICA
Are you in any pain?

GRANDMAMA REYES
Only a little, but I fight
it off because I cannot go yet.

Monica listens.

GRANDMAMA REYES
(weak; after a beat)
You must listen to me
very carefully Monica.

Monica hears the desperation in her voice.

GRANDMAMA REYES
(weak; dead serious)
They have begun...

Grandmama tries to sit up, but Monica stops her.

MONICA
Lay down, Grandmama.

GRANDMAMA REYES
We cannot win. Not on our own.
We are not strong enough. (beat)
Time worked against us.

Grandmama looks into Monica’s eyes.

GRANDMAMA REYES
(after a beat)
You know this... You feel them.

Grandmama watches her for a beat.

GRANDMAMA REYES
In my living room, in the box on
my table, there is something for
you. It is meant for you at this
time. Keep it with always, Monica.
Never lose it. It is so important
that you keep it. (beat) It is the key.

Monica nods her head.

GRANDMAMA REYES
(stressing her seriousness)
No matter what, you keep it.

MONICA
I will.

Grandmama relaxes and her breathing begins to slow.

GRANDMAMA REYES
I do not have much time.

A tear falls down Monica’s cheek. Grandmama looks at her again.

GRANDMAMA REYES
(after a beat)
Stay close to Brad. He needs your
protection. (beat) You need him too,
when they are against you. (beat) Monica,
you are so special. Always have been, but
never knew it. You have powers inside of you.
You will find it. I trust this. You are
healer. It is in destiny it all had to happen.

Grandmama’s voice is weaker, talking becoming more and more difficult for her.

GRANDMAMA REYES
(weaker, quieter)
Always remember your heart... It
is never wrong. (beat) Trust it.

MONICA
I will, Grandmama.

Grandmama shuts her eyes slowly and her body relaxes.

GRANDMAMA REYES
(quiet)
Te amo, Monica Isabella...

Her body relaxes more and her chest falls, never rising again.

Silence consumes the room.

MONICA
(choking on tears)
Te amo, Grandmama.

Monica’s eyes are filled with tears, she looks down at the lifeless hand she holds in hers. Tears fall as she shuts her eyes, feeling Grandmama’s soul and spirit depart from the Earth.

After a moment, she sets her Grandmama’s hand on the bed and rises, leaving the room.

INT. LIVING ROOM – CON’T

Brad sits in a chair, tears in his eyes. He looks up when Monica comes out of Grandmama’s room.

MONICA
(calm)
She’s gone.

She holds her emotions in check and goes over to the table Grandmama told her about. She opens the box and pulls out a rock, light in color, with strange markings on it.

Brad comes over.

BRAD
What’s that?

MONICA
(quoting Grandmama)
The key to everything...

Monica examines the rock in her hand. How can this little rock be the key? And the key to what? How can a rock be so important that Grandmama would tell her to keep it with her at all times on her death bed? This little rock is the most important thing to Grandmama, so much so that she would tell Monica about it on her deathbed.

Off Monica and Brad’s confusion...

CUT TO:

INT. KNOWLE’S HUMMER – CON’T

11:06 PM, LOCAL TIME

Knowle and Skinner sit in silence. They are both stunned by what happened only a few minutes ago. The light from the explosion is still scene through the rearview mirror of the car.

They’re all gone. He could’ve gotten them out of there and they’d be here now. Maybe not all, but those close to him. Men like John Doggett. How could he let Dana down like he did?

Skinner looks over at Knowle. He’s been quiet since they got away. He’s probably feeling the same guilt that he feels. Skinner looks away from him. How did Knowle even know to leave? Maybe it was luck. The same luck that told him to leave the barracks. It was luck he found Knowle’s hummer when he did.

But the guilt eats him up inside. He left John Doggett. Even after Dana told him to stay close to Knowle, he didn’t warn the others. But how was he supposed to know these things... these aliens... would attack tonight.

How could he do that to the others? They were brothers. Brothers brought together by the strength and bond of the United States Marine Corps.

Skinner looks behind him, out the back window of the vehicle. He sees an alien craft moving towards them.

SKINNER
Uh... one of those things is
coming up on us.

Knowle looks out his rearview mirror and can see almost see it. He pushes his foot down on the accelerator.

Skinner looks at him. Does he really think he’s going to out run this thing? They traveled billions of light years to take over the planet. He looks back out the window and sees the craft moving faster, gaining on them.

SKINNER
They’re gaining on us!

KNOWLE
(calm)
In the back, there’s a really big
gun. Get it. Use the sunroof and
blast that thing out of the sky.

Skinner nods his head and unbuckles his seat belt. He makes his way to the back and picks up the largest weapon he can find. He looks at it, then up front at Knowle.

SKINNER
(who is this guy?)
A bazooka?

A shot is fired at them from above, hitting the ground in front of them. Knowle swerves to avoid the destruction in the road. He doesn’t miss a beat and is back on track in no time.

KNOWLE
That’s it. Use it!

Skinner takes it and opens the sunroof. He stands up, standing out above the Hummer, looking up at the alien craft that is almost on top of them. He can feel the vehicle speed up. He sets up and takes aim at the craft.

The aliens fire down at them once again.

SKINNER
(shouting to Knowle)
Uh... it’s right above us. Speed up!

Skinner jerks back a bit as the vehicle speeds up some more. The craft falls behind and Skinner takes aim again, shooting it, hitting it.

The craft starts to crash down to the ground.

Skinner cheers with a Marine “whoo-hoo!” as the craft starts to fall, crashing near them. Skinner smiles as he sees it hit the ground, disabled. He sets the bazooka inside and looks down at Knowle.

SKINNER
It’s gone! Good thing we can
blow those fuckers out of the sky!

Suddenly, a loud screeching scream is head. Skinner looks up, just as an alien jumps up at him. It’s claws sharp and extended for attack, ready to kill. Skinner’s eyes widen, not having any time to physically react as the alien claws at him.

Inside the Hummer, Knowle looks up, having heard the alien scream, and now hearing Skinner struggling up top.

Knowle grabs hold of his handgun and slams on the breaks, abruptly stopping the vehicle. He quickly gets out and shoots at the alien that is attacking Skinner.

The alien stops attacking Skinner and jumps down at Knowle, dropping him to the ground. Knowle shoots at it, knowing it doesn’t do anything to kill it, just knocking if off its course slightly. The alien holds its arm up and makes a swift move to rip Knowle in half, but is stopped by Skinner jabbing the stilleto into the base of its neck, killing it instantly.

The alien falls down onto Knowle, who pushes the dead alien body off himself.

SKINNER
You ok?

KNOWLE
I’m fine. You’ve been cut up bad.

Knowle gets to his feet.

SKINNER
I see more coming. Lets get
the hell out of here.

Knowle nods his head and they run back into the Hummer.

INT. HUMMER – CON’T

Knowle floors it the hell out of there.

KNOWLE
There’s a first aid kit under your
seat. Clean and stitch your wounds.

Skinner pulls out the first aid kit. It’s loaded with medical supplies. Skinner looks at Knowle.

SKINNER
Some first aid kid. (beat)
What else do you have?

KNOWLE
We’re loaded with weapons; guns,
grenades, knives. Blankets, canned food.

SKINNER
I saw you stole a couple sleeping
bags with USMC on them.

KNOWLE
I like to be prepared. I’ve also
stocked up on water.

SKINNER
Can opener for the food?

KNOWLE
Got that too.

Skinner nods, then winces as he stitches up his shoulder.

SKINNER
(wincing; under breath)
Mother fucker. (beat; to Knowle)
Got any pain killers?

KNOWLE
Do you really think you need
it for your wounds?

Knowle looks over at him.

SKINNER
(after a beat)
No.

KNOWLE
Then lets be resourceful.

Skinner nods his head. He had a feeling he’d say that.

KNOWLE
We are now in a world where the
yesterday we knew, won’t ever be
the tomorrow we can expect.

Skinner moves the rear view mirror to get a better view of his head so he can stitch up the cut on the side of his skull.

KNOWLE
We don’t know what’s ahead. We don’t
even know where our next big meal will
come from. Hell, life is more uncertain
than it was two hours ago. (beat) So what’s
your military history?

Skinner finished his stitches and readjust the mirror.

SKINNER
Last war I was in was ‘Nam. Enlisted
on my own when I was eighteen. (beat)
Almost died, saw my friends die. (beat)
I was pretty good out in the shit.

KNOWLE
I was in the Gulf. Retired because of
injury. Got with the DOD and started
doing Special Ops in 1998. Been doing
that ever since then.

SKINNER
Special ops. That’s comforting to know.
(beat) I bet you have stories to tell.

KNOWLE
That I do.

Skinner looks behind them again, making sure they are not being followed. He sees nothing behind them. He turns to face forward again.

SKINNER
So where are we going?

KNOWLE
Alexandria.

SKINNER
What’s there?

Knowle doesn’t answer right away. He knows he shouldn’t base what they do and where they go on personal biases. He has to get into “war mode”, but he can’t do that until he knows Monica is safe.

KNOWLE
(after a beat)
Monica. I made a promise to her that
I’d come back for her when this happened.
(beat) The sooner we get there, the better.

Knowle accelerates in speed.

KNOWLE
All of our military forces are gone. They
divided us, leaving the weakest without
protection. They’ll hit the cities next.

SKINNER
You know how they’ll attack?

KNOWLE
Bees. I’m pretty sure of it. They’ll
be carrying the virus. (beat) Were you
inoculated?

SKINNER
I don’t know.

KNOWLE
Monica’s immune to them. The
vaccine comes from her.

SKINNER
I’m sure her psychic ability
can’t hurt to have around now.

KNOWLE
If they don’t get to her first.

Knowle’s mind thinks back to when they were stranded on that island in January. Monica was taken by them and no one knows why. Monica doesn’t even remember all that happened. All he knows is that they took her and she had to escape, and has a nice scar to remind her of that.

Skinner looks at him, not understanding what he means. He feels the Hummer pick up speed again.

KNOWLE
When we were on the island, she was
take by aliens. She said they held
her there by her mind. She called
it “mind warfare”. (beat) Tonight,
I read that they can make a person’s
worse nightmare seem to come true.

SKINNER
What does that mean?

KNOWLE
I don’t know for sure, but if they
could get her and hold her with her mind,
who’s to say they won’t give her worst
nightmare to her.

Skinner isn’t sure what to think of all this.

SKINNER
Don’t take I-95. Monica once
told me it’d be blocked. (beat)
I’m not exactly sure what she meant.

Knowle nods his head. This could slow them down since they’ll have to take back roads and two-lane highways. His foot presses down on the accelerator.

Skinner looks out the window. His hand gently touches the wound on his shoulder. His mind races back to them he left behind at the barracks.

John Doggett is dead.

If they ever find Dana, what will he tell her? She saved him by telling him to stick close to Knowle. Yet he couldn’t save John Doggett for her.

SKINNER
We have to go to Falls Church too.

KNOWLE
I know. Dana.

Skinner looks over at him. Perhaps he’s feeling the same way he is.

KNOWLE
She’s John’s girl.

Knowle speeds up his driving again, pushing well over 100 miles per hour. He stares intensely out the front window. His mind can’t stop thinking of Monica and the promise he made to her. If only he found out sooner, he could be there by not, protecting her.

The others would still be alive too. John Doggett, Shannon McMahon – two Marines he’s closest to.

He can’t linger on something he has no control over.

Bees come out during the day. Taking back roads will slow them down. It’ll be daylight before they reach Alexandria. It’ll be more dangerous once the hot sun comes out. Aliens gestate faster in the heat. It’s already hot and humid at night.

What will it be tomorrow?

His hummer can’t drive fast enough, but he has to stay safe, drive safe, so he can get there in one piece. He keeps his current speed as we start to pull back out of the hummer and above them. Watching from above as the vehicle flies down the dark empty road.

Off in the distance a large craft quickly and steadily travels in the same direction, making its way north to Washington, D.C.

CUT TO:

INT. FBI BASEMENT – WASHINGTON, D.C. – JANITOR’S LOUNGE

Mulder, Krycek and Marita sit around a small table. A single can of corn sits in the center. Mulder and Krycek looks at it with dumbfounded expressions. Marita looks from Mulder to Krycek and back again with an expectant look.

Mulder leans back in his chair, folds his arms across his chest and looks at Marita.

MULDER
We didn’t have a can
opener down here yet.

MARITA
(this is just perfect)
So we have all this canned food
and no way to get into it?

Mulder and Krycek don’t answer. They’re at a loss at what to do.

Krycek leans back in his chair, folds his arms, and looks at Marita.

KRYCEK
If there’s a will, there’s a way.

Mulder and Marita look at him.

KRYCEK
We just have to be creative.

MARITA
Are you sure no one had
a can opener in their desk?

MULDER
No, we never had one.

MARITA
What about Dana? Or John?

Mulder and Krycek share a look and shake their heads. The possibilities of John or Dana having a can opener are as sure to happen as George Lucas releasing the original “Star Wars” trilogy on DVD, fully restored to how it should be.

MULDER/KRYCEK
Nah...

KRYCEK
I highly doubt it.

MULDER
Yeah, and Scully can’t cook anyway.

Marita stands up. If they won’t do it, she will.

MARITA
I’m going to go look anyway.

KRYCEK
Suit yourself, Snuffles, but I
doubt you’ll find one.

Marita leaves the Janitor’s Lounge.

MULDER
(after a beat)
You wanna play “The Streak”?

KRYCEK
Why not. After all, it is the best
song in the whole wide world. That’s
why we preserved it down here.

Mulder gets up happily and goes over to a CD player and hits the PLAY button. A second later and “The Streak” by Ray Stevens starts to play.

REPORTER
(on CD player)
Hello, everyone, this is your action news
reporter with all the news that is news across
the nation, on the scene at the supermarket.
There seems to have been some disturbance here.
Pardon me, sir, did you see what happened?

Mulder sits down with a goofy grin.

WITNESS
(on CD player)
Yeah, I did. I's standin' overe there by the
tomaters, and here he come, running through
the pole beans, through the fruits and vegetables,
nekkid as a jay bird. And I hollered over t' Ethel,
I said, "Don't look, Ethel!" But it's too late,
she'd already been incensed.

BACKGROUND SINGERS
(on CD player)
Here he comes, look at that, look at that
There he goes, look at that, look at that
And he ain't wearin' no clothes
Oh, yes, they call him the Streak
Look at that, look at that
Fastest thing on two feet
Look at that, look at that
He's just as proud as he can be
Of his anatomy
He goin' give us a peek

Mulder and Krycek bob their heads and laugh as the song continues to play.

Marita comes in with a can opener in hand. She holds it up and smiles.

MARITA
Ta-da! Dana was always prepared.

She goes over to the tale and opens the can.

MARITA
Now please tell me we have
microwave safe bowls.

Mulder looks at Krycek with bug eyes. Krycek bugs his eyes. Marita’s jaw drops.

MARITA
Oh my god! You’re kidding me!

She sits down with a hug. How the hell are they supposed to survive for six months like this?!

MARITA
(pissed)
This! This is unbelievable! We
can’t eat! We’re going to die!

Krycek takes hold of her hand.

KRYCEK
(serious)
We’re joking, Marita. We
are completely microwave safe.

She hits him, then hits Mulder.

MARITA
You shouldn’t joke about
these things. (beat) And what
the hell is this song?

KRYCEK
(a little too happy)
It’s only the best song ever!

He smiles at her and Marita listens.

BACKGROUND SINGERS
(on CD player)
Oh, yes, they call him the Streak
Look at that, look at that
He likes to show off his physique
Look at that, look at that
If there's an audience to be found
He'll be streakin' around
Invitin' public critique

REPORTER
(on CD player)
This is your action news reporter once
again, and we're here at the gas station.
Pardon me, sir, did you see what happened?

MARITA
Is it about someone streaking?

KRYCEK
(singing)
That’s why they call him The Streak. Wee!

Marita laughs.

MARITA
It’s ridiculous.

MULDER
It’s the only song we preserved.

Marita snaps a look at him.

MARITA
(fearing what that means)
The only song?

Krycek nods his head.

Mulder lets out a worried sigh. Krycek and Marita looks at him. Since when does having “The Streak” preserved for all eternity make Mulder worry?

MARITA
What is it, Mulder?

Mulder looks up at them.

MULDER
I just wish the others
could’ve been down here.

Krycek and Marita listen.

MULDER (CON’T)
I mean, once June 11th comes, its going to
be very dangerous. (beat) And the chip in
Scully’s neck holds vital information to our
survival, including, but not limited to: alien
plans once attacks are done, how to beat the
aliens and save our buddies, digitized Pentagon
files that will help a secret government group
function successfully. And she doesn’t know any of it.

Marita and Krycek stare blankly at him.

MULDER
I never had time to tell her
so she knows to be careful with it.

KRYCEK
(shocked)
That chip holds information on
how to beat the aliens when they come?

Mulder nods his head.

MULDER
The Smoking Man told me so.
(beat) Apparently, he’s my
secret informant.

KRYCEK
But I killed him.

MULDER
He said he has access to
power or something.

MARITA
An alien shape-shifter.

KRYCEK
(mad)
But he had red blood! Not green!

How could he not have killed the real Smoking Man. He pouts. He was so da man when he did that. He even told him to “smoke on this puff daddy”.

MARITA
(serious)
Unless they’ve mutated.

Off her worried look...

CUT TO:

INT. DOGGETT & SCULLY’S HOUSE – MORNING

MAY 14
8:34 A.M.

Scully goes into the kitchen and pours dog food into Buddy’s bowl. She’s comfortably dressed in her pajamas, wearing her Whinny The Pooh Bear slippers on her feet.

SCULLY
Bud, breakfast!

Buddy can be heard running across the living room. His collar jingling as he runs fast onto the slippery tile floor of the kitchen. He slides a couple feet as he slips. He goes to his bowl and Scully pets his head and smiles at him.

SCULLY
I’m going to get the paper.

Buddy makes a noise from below that sounds a lot like he just said “Ok.”

Scully stands up and head out of the kitchen.

Buddy stops eating and watches Scully. He becomes still and his eyes fixate outside. He louts out a low “ruff” as Scully approaches the front door.

She stops when she looks outside. Thousands of bees are swarming all around. She backs away and stands for a beat.

This is happening sooner than was expected.

She watches in shock, seeing a neighbor get attacked and fall to the ground.

Scully turns and heads back to the kitchen.

SCULLY
Buddy!

She enters the kitchen just in time to see Buddy run out the doggy door. She runs to the window and looks out to the backyard. She doesn’t see him.

SCULLY
(worried)
Buddy...

She can’t go after him. Chances are, they’re not after dogs. She steps away from the window and looks around. She has to secure this place so the bees can’t get in. More importantly so the newly gestated aliens can’t get in easily.

She runs out of the kitchen and up the stairs. She enters the bedroom and quickly gets dressed, throwing on John’s tan USMC t-shirt and a pair of jeans. She tosses some clothes into a duffle bag.

Hairbrush, toothpaste, toothbrush, winter clothes, a nice white dress even make sway into the bag in her mad rush. Blankets, sheets and a pillow are pulled off the bed.

She runs down the stairs and tosses a few books, including a medical book into the bag. Framed photos of John’s family, their friends. She goes to the front closet and retrieves a safe. She unlocks it and pulls out a handgun.

She quickly runs into the kitchen, pulls out duct tape from a drawer and tapes up the doggy door and the cracks around the door. She runs to the front door and does the same.

She looks out the window and sees one of her neighbors dead on the ground. His stomach torn open.

Her eyes widen, that happened fast.

She backs away from the door. They’re out there...

She grabs her duffle bag and goes to the kitchen. She tosses food into the bag. Fruit, water bottles, bread, sandwich meat. Anything she can toss in there.

She closes the refrigerator and stands for a moment. Is there anything she’s missing?

The kitchen begins to darken and loud bussing is heard. She looks at the window. It’s covered with bees... as if they know she’s in there. She backs up, stopped by the kitchen counter. Do they sense her?

She opens the drawer she backed into and pulls out a flashlight, batteries, matches and a candle. She tosses them all into her bag.

She gulps down her feat and runs out of the kitchen. Bees are covering the windows of the living room too. She can hear them at the door, trying to break through the cracks. She gulps down her fear and runs down to the basement, locking the door behind her. She leaves the light off. Maybe they won’t know she’s there.

The basement is warmer than usual, but that’s expected with how the weather has been. Hot and humid – the perfect conditions for these aliens to gestate fast and grow stronger than humans.

She turns the flashlight on and pulls out the duct tape. She seals all the little windows so nothing can get in.

She goes over to the dusty, never before used bar and sits behind it with her bag by her side. She curls her knees up to her chest. She’s terrified. Those bees were surrounding her house. Do they sense her? Her irrational mind wanders to Mulder and his theory of aluminum foil hats. Tears fall down her face. She hadn’t even realized she was crying.

She looks around the bar and sees three boxes of bottled water. John must’ve gotten them.

John.

Another tear falls. She hopes he’s safe. He’s probably fighting right now. She wonders what he thinks of all this. The sky is falling, his beliefs destroyed. She hopes he can keep a level head and be safe so he can return to her.

Part of her wishes she would’ve gone down to North Carolina. Not that she’d be allowed in the barracks, but at least she’d be closer to him. At least she’d be able to tell him she loves him with all her heart.

She wipes a tear away as she starts to hear buzzing all around her house. Neighbors can be heard calling out for help. She covers her ears. She can’t hear this. There’s nothing she can do but hope they’ve been inoculated with the vaccine.

Scully looks up, a strange expression on her face. She moves her hand to the base of her neck. The sensation is there again. She hasn’t felt it since she was stranded on the island in January. They must be close to Virginia now.

Off her fear...

EXT. GRANDMAMA REYES’S HOME – MORNING

Monica sits on the ground in front of a small mound of dirt. A wooden cross is in the ground, marking the final resting place of Carmen Isabel de Velázquez. Monica sits in silence, holding a single yellow rose in her hand.

Brad comes out of the house and watches Monica for a moment.

MONICA
(sensing him)
Is Toby all right?

BRAD
I took him down to the town.

Brad comes over and stands behind her.

BRAD
Monica, we should pack up soon.

Monica sets the yellow rose on top of the mound of dirt. She wishes she could stay longer, but knows it is not safe.

MONICA
Yes, we should. We have to get back home.

Monica gets up and brushes the dirt off of herself.

MONICA
We have to go north. I feel it.

She goes inside and Brad follows.

INT. KITCHEN – CON’T

BRAD
What’s north?

MONICA
Aliens can’t survive in cold
weather. They’re weaker.

Brad rubs the back of his neck. Aliens coming to invade is to scifi for him. But he knows Monica can’t be making any of it up. It’s why she was taken to the Facility.

MONICA
I know you don’t-

Monica is cut off by the rock Grandmama gave her. It starts to slowly turn on the kitchen table. Monica and Brad look at it.

BRAD
What is...

He trails off as he watches it. Monica goes over to it and places her hand on it to stop it from moving. She picks it up and looks at it.

BRAD
That’s no ordinary rock.

MONICA
It’s warm. (beat) Grandmama told me
I had power that I didn’t know about.

She looks up at Brad.

MONICA
What if she was confused and
misspoke her words and she meant
that this has power...

BRAD
Could be, but how can a rock have power?

She looks back down at it.

MONICA
I don’t know. (beat) I don’t think
we should forget to pack it though.

Brad nods his head. He holds his hand out to get a better look at it. She hands it to him.

The markings are like nothing he’s ever seen before. How could something like this rock be the key? It doesn’t make sense? How can something inanimate hold power?

MONICA
(after a beat)
Grandmama also told me the
aliens have begun their attacks.

Brad looks up at her.

BRAD
Do you sense them?

MONICA
I do.

She looks at him for a moment.

MONICA
I think we should pack anything we
could use around here. Just incase
we can’t get back home.

Brad looks at her. How bad is this going to be?

MONICA
(re: his thought)
The world that we know today is
not the world we will know tomorrow.

Brad looks into her eyes, sensing how serious she is.

MONICA
You didn’t bring a weapon, did you?

BRAD
No, I didn’t.

MONICA
Then we’ll have to make sure to
avoid situations where a weapon
would be useful.

BRAD
Your Grandmama had some knives.
It’s better than nothing, right?

MONICA
That’s a good idea. (beat) I’ll go
out to the garden and get some food.

BRAD
I’ll pack things into the car.

Monica nods.

MONICA
(after a beat)
I’m scared, Brad. Grandmama even
said we can’t win this war. What
if we never can go back home? What if-

BRAD
(soft)
-Moni... just believe.

He looks at her and goes up to her.

BRAD
You have a Gift that can
help us survive.

Monica looks down. Knowle’s dog tags come into her view.

MONICA
What about the others?

BRAD
They’re smart. Strong. They’ve heard
the warnings that this was going to happen.

Monica nods her head.

MONICA
(after a beat)
On the island... I was taken by them. They
held me without physical restraints. They
held me by my mind. Disabled me. (beat) Somehow,
I managed to break free, but Brad... there were
only a few there. Now... now they’ve come to take
over the planet. There’s going to be more of them.
Thousands, millions, maybe even billions.

Tears come to her eyes.

MONICA
(scared)
I don’t know what’s going to happen.
I can’t see it. I’m afraid to see. What
if tapping into my ability alters them to
where I am? Where we are? (beat) What if I
shut down? What if they shut me down?

Brad comes up to her and looks deep into her soft brown eyes.

BRAD
I promise you, Monica, I will look
out for you. I’ll never let anything
bad happen to you. (beat) I’m here
for you. Always.

Monica nods her head.

BRAD
I know my words probably don’t calm
your fears, but I want you to know
that I will always be here for you.

MONICA
And I will always be here for you.

She places a gentle hand on the side of his face and looks into his hazel eyes. His hand reaches up and takes hold of hers. He brings her hand to his lips and kisses it gently.

Monica feels his heart for her.

MONICA
I do love you, Brad.

BRAD
I know, Monica. I know (beat) Just
not in the way we were trying to be.

Tears fall from her eyes.

BRAD
Don’t cry or be upset, Monica. I’m
not mad. (beat) He loves you. I’ve
always known that. (beat) And I’ve always
known you felt something for him, even
if you had no idea.

He pulls her into a hug.

BRAD
(soft)
He’s a smart man. He knows
things. (beat) We’ll find him again.

He pulls away enough to look at her.

BRAD
I promise.

Monica wraps her arms around him tightly, as we...

CUT TO:

INT. ALVIN B. KERSH’S OFFICE – FBI HEADQUARTERS – DAY

Alvin Kersh sits at his desk. Unlike other days, he is not doing paperwork. Rather, he is looking at the wedding ring that now rests back on his hand. He smiles, finally happy to be getting his personal life back on track. All the hardships he and his beautiful wife, Linda, went through are behind him. He lets out a sigh and sits back in his chair. His eyes fall on the framed photo of his family.

A knock on the door interrupts his pleasant thoughts.

KERSH
Come in.

Jeffrey Spender enters the office.

SPENDER
You needed to speak with me, sir?

KERSH
Yes, please have a seat.

Spender sits down and sees Kersh’s nameplate.

SPENDER
Sir, I’ve got a question.

KERSH
Go ahead.

SPENDER
Alvin B. Kersh. (beat) What does
the “B” stand for?

KERSH
Bernie.

Spender holds in his laughter.

SPENDER
Your full name is Alvin Bernie Kersh?

KERSH
Yes.

Spender nods, trying to keep from laughing at such a silly name.

KERSH
Anyway, Agent Spender, I’ve called you
in because there’s a promotional opportunity
for you down in our San Antonio field office.

Spender raises an eyebrow. It’s about time.

SPENDER
Really?

KERSH
Yes, and I think you’d be perfect-

Kersh is cut off by the expression on Spender’s face.

KERSH
Is everything all right, Agent Spender?

SPENDER
What the hell is that?

Spender points out the window behind Kersh. An alien craft is hovering in the sky. Kersh turns in his chair and immediately stands up.

Kim Cook enters the office, carrying a thick sealed envelope.

KIM COOK
Sir, those documents-

She drops the envelope to the ground when she sees the large craft hovering in the sky.

KIM COOK
(scared)
Sir?

KERSH
We need to evacuate the building.

Kersh turns to his desk and picks up his phone.

KERSH
(to Spender and Kim)
Get out of here!

Spender makes his way to the door, grabbing Kim by the arm.

INT. HALLWAY – CON’T

Spender leads Kim down the hall.

SPENDER
Mulder set up a bomb shelter in the
basement. I know he’d want you
down there with him.

KIM COOK
What’s going on?

SPENDER
Alien invasion.

Spender doesn’t let go of her. He may have been a dick to his brother about like her, but he knows how much he cares for her.

They reach the elevator and he hits the button.

Word has gotten around the FBI and panic is hitting the floor they’re on. Agents quickly make their way to emergency exits.

KIM COOK
(scared)
Should we follow them?

Spender watches, unsure what to do.

Suddenly, a loud explosion is heard and the building shakes. Plaster falls from above. Kim grabs onto Spender as they hit the ground for protection.

CUT TO:

INT. FBI BASEMENT – CON’T

Mulder and Krycek are playing ping-pong. Marita sits reading a book, “Breakfast At Tiffany’s”, that she found in Scully’s desk. She looks up randomly at the boys and the little white plastic ball that bounces from paddle to paddle.

The ground suddenly shakes and the white plastic ball bounces to the ground.

MULDER
What was that?

Krycek shakes his head and listens.

Suddenly, a loud explosion is head and the ground shakes. The lights flicker.

Krycek looks over at Marita, who looks at them with fear in her eyes.

MULDER
They’re coming.

The ground shakes again and the explosion is even louder.

MARITA
(scared)
Alex...

Krycek rushes over to her and pulls her out of her chair. The lights flicker again and the structure above them can be heard crashing down.

KRYCEK
They’re bombing us. Follow me.

He drags Marita with him to Scully and Doggett’s office. Mulder follows. Krycek sits them down on the ground and pulls mattresses off the beds Mulder put down there. He tosses blankets and pillows at them.

The explosions continue. The ground never seeming to stop shaking.

Krycek comes over to them and puts the mattresses over them and gets under. He holds Marita close to him, covering her head to protect her.

The lights flicker, darkness staying with them longer than they’d like.

MULDER
(scared)
Can this hold up?

He looks to Krycek for an answers, but he has none.

KRYCEK
Keep your head covered.

Mulder does as Krycek tells him. Krycek holds Marita close to him, protecting her with his life. He’d die for her if it came to that.

Off their fear as the J. Edgar Hoover Building crumbles down on top of them, we...

CUT TO:

EXT. MONICA’S APARTMENT BUILDING – DAY

ALEXANDRIA, VA

Knowle’s Hummer pulls up in front of the building. Alien crafts cover the sky, blowing up building. Chaos has hit the streets. Police officers running, giving up on keeping peace and order.

It’s every man for himself.

The bees have halted their attacks for the air raids.

Knowle and Skinner look around. They see a man shoot another just to get his means of transportation.

KNOWLE
(disbelief)
Jesus.

SKINNER
It’s every man for himself out there.

KNOWLE
You stay here while I go get her.

Skinner nods and grabs a couple guns just in case he needs them. Knowle does as well and gets out of the Hummer.

Skinner watches the chaos with sharp eyes.

INT. MONICA’S APARTMENT BUILDING – CON’T

Knowle runs up the stairs and pounds on Monica’s door.

KNOWLE
Monica! It’s Knowle!

An explosion goes off near by and the ground shakes below his feet.

For a split second he experiences fear. The fear he remembers from when the barracks he, John and Shannon were in during the Gulf War got bombed. Good god he doesn’t want to be trapped in another crumbling building.

Without anymore hesitation he kicks down the door and rushes in.

INT. MONICA’S APARTMENT – CON’T

Everything is cleaned, just how she left it.

KNOWLE
(frantic)
MONICA!

He searches for her. Searching every room and closet.

She’s not here.

He stops for a moment in shock. Where the hell could she be?

Knowle makes his way to the door, but stops when he sees a note on the wooden table by the door. His name is written on it in her handwriting. He picks it up.

Another explosion shakes the ground. Getting closer and closer.

He reads the note:

I’m at Grandmama’s. Go north, they’re weaker there. Do what you have to do. I’ll find you. Take cover in the basement. I love you. Monica

He folds the note and puts it in his pocket.

EXT. MONICA’S APARTMENT BUILDING – CON’T

Knowle comes running out of the building. Skinner looks over at him.

KNOWLE
GET OVER HERE!

Skinner gets out of the vehicle and follows Knowle into the building. They make their way down to the basement.

SKINNER
Is she here?

KNOWLE
No.

A loud explosion shakes the ground. The building has been hit. Debris falls as the structure weakens.

KNOWLE
It’s too dangerous to get to
Falls Church. We take cover here.

The lights go out, leaving them in the dark as the screams of chaos and explosions continue above.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. GRANDMAMA REYES’S HOME – DAY

Monica stares out at the canyon, watching a dark swarm of bees attack the town below. Behind her, Brad loads the car, unaware of what’s going on below in the town. He finishes and comes over to her.

BRAD
Ready to go?

Monica’s eyes widen as she looks down at the canyon, seeing a swarm of bees quickly making their way up to them.

MONICA
(calm)
Run.

She grabs her back and starts to move away from the cliffside.

BRAD
(confused)
What?

MONICA
RUN!

Suddenly, bees fly up at them, heading straight towards them. Monica’s eyes widen as she runs up to Brad and grabs onto him. They duck to the ground. Monica shielding him from the bees.

The bees dive down at them, but quickly split apart as the rock Grandmama gave to Monica protects them from the swarm. They are both untouched as the bees swarm around them.

Monica’s eyes open and she looks around. They are not harmed. No bee can touch them. Brad and Monica rise to their feet, and off them, we...

FADE OUT:

THE END.
