INT. MANNER’S BAR – NIGHT
FRIDAY, MARCH 17
The bar is loud, but not rowdy and decorated
for St. Patrick’s Day. Music is playing, people are shooting pool,
smoking, and having a good time. In the back of the bar, a booth is
occupied with Doggett, who has his arm around Scully. Brad, Mulder,
Krycek and Marita. They are all laughing.
(trying to talk through laughter)
... so she comes up and she’s completely
oblivious to the doctors standing by waiting,
and she pulls out this really thick binder
that’s filled with notebook paper-
-Don’t forget the picture pasted on the front.
Oh yeah, and she’s got a picture of Mulder
and Dana pasted on the front of this binder,
and it’s surrounded by a bright pink heart.
(beat) But she comes in and she sits down
and says that she’s written a new “fanfic”-
whatever that is anyway – and she starts to
read the most horrid words imaginable.
I give the doctors a look because they didn’t
believe us when we told them how she was.
She scares me.
The doctors interrupt her and she puts on
this screaming hissy fit, or whatever.
Yelling about how her shipper friends
will get us, and who knows what else.
She left kicking and screaming and with
a nice Section 8 on her record.
Brad shakes his head.
I’m just glad Agent Harrison is out
of the basement.
I’m glad she’s out of the FBI forever.
Wait... wasn’t this Leyla girl
Dana’s partner? If she isn’t there
any more, who is her partner now?
Doggett coughs a bit and sits up, and takes
his glass of ginger ale.
I’ve been put back down there.
He smiles, not exactly thrilled with being demoted
back down to The X-Files Division from where he was sitting in OPR.
But you’re a good agent, John.
You’ll do justice to the cases.
I’ll be honest, I’m not thrilled,
but that’s the system we work in.
(beat) They put you where they need you.
Scully kisses him on the cheek.
(whispers in his ear)
At least I’ve got a sexy partner.
Isn’t Monica coming? She said she was.
Brad looks over at Krycek.
Then she must be. (beat) But
I’ve really gotta ask...
Brad looks at Krycek like he’s crazy. And he
should. Krycek is wearing a United States Marines T-Shirt, and looks
like he has a goatee.
This whole Marines get up you have,
and the fake goatee... what’s that about?
It’s not fake!
Marita leans over, grabs his chin and kisses
him. She pulls away and his goatee has “mysteriously” smeared. Marita
shows everyone her hands that have brown on them now from his face.
(to Krycek; re: Marita)
Then what’s on her hand?
Krycek’s eyes bug.
CRAP! Wait to go, Marita!
Krycek gets up from the table and makes his
way to the bathroom.
(after a beat)
Alex thinks he’s going to be like
Knowle. You know, so Knowle will
like him or something. (beat) Frankly
I think he’s being ridiculous and
having another identity crisis.
You should’ve seen him in the shoe
store the other day. (beat; lowers voice)
He was looking at platforms.
Scully laughs and some of her drink comes out
of her mouth. She grabs a napkin and wipes away the mess.
(holding in laughter)
Alex found out that Knowle
is six foot four inches tall.
It’s another case of “Alex
has penis envy”... or something.
What do you mean “another case”?
He’s done this before?
Mulder nods his head as he sips his drink.
In high school when Mulder became
the quarterback for our school.
Mulder, Marita and Scully both shake their heads,
remember back to high school when Krycek tried to be like Mulder.
He’s an interesting guy.
I just hope he cleans up his
face before anyone else sees him.
Like Knowle? He’d have a blast with this.
Mulder looks up towards the entryway of the
bar, just in time to see Knowle and Monica enter.
Gee, speak of the devil.
Everyone looks towards the door. Monica waves
at them as she and Knowle make their way over to the booth.
Let’s not tell him what Alex
has done incase his face is
clean when he comes back.
They all nod their heads... anything they can
do to halt any Krycek Drama.
Monica and Knowle reach the table and everyone
scoots over so they can sit down.
So how is everyone?
Agent Creepy Crazy is out of the FBI.
Oh that’s good.
Knowle nods his head.
And I’ve been put back in The X-Files.
You know what my Grandmama always
says: everything happens for a reason.
She smiles at him.
(after a beat)
Well, some big changes happened
at work today for me too.
Alex is the new principal.
Everyone stops what they are doing and look
at her for a long beat.
Yes, you all heard me right. He’s
the principal of an elementary school.
Mulder’s jaw drops and his straw sticks to his
Can anyone guess the first thing
he said to me?
They’re all still stunned that Krycek is the
principal of an elementary school.
(after a beat)
“Hey there hot tamale.”
Typical Krycek thing to say...
He’s the principal? What brought that on?
Well, I had to ask him myself because
it seemed so unlike him. You know,
before he was working at fast food
restaurants or street venders. And
he said that it was because he wanted
to grow up, which we all know translates
Monica smiles at Marita.
(after a beat; halfway to herself)
He’s so odd... he’s trying to
grow and impress me but all
the while he’s trying to look
and act like Knowle.
Knowle looks over at her.
(did he hear her right)
(obviously deterring the subject)
SO... Anyone else scared that
he’s going to be influencing children?
Doggett leans over to her.
(whispers in her ear)
Nice try on changing the subject
away from Krycek...
Scully winces, she’s not good at that when she
thinks too much.
(re: Scully’s question)
Well I think it is just swell
that Alex wants to grow up and
take on more responsibility.
That’s right baby.
He sits down next to Marita, his fake goatee
reapplied on his face. Marita looks at him and cringes.
Krycek looks over and sees Knowle.
Why do you have a fake goatee?
Another good question to ask
would be: Why is he wearing
a USMC T-shirt?
Because I’m like you, man. Gun-ho!
Actually you’re a principal
of an elementary school.
Yes, Alex. You are. So stop
this penis envy you have and
be yourself. You know I love
you when you are you and not
Krycek doesn’t know what to say. He’s been caught
off guard, and it certainly doesn’t help that everyone knows his goatee
Sorry, I just thought you’d all
like me better this way.
Sasha, we all like you how you are.
She takes a napkin and wipes his goatee off
his face, then kisses him. He blushes.
I love you Snuggums.
I love you Snuffles.
Mulder rolls his eyes.
Anyone up for a game of pool?
Oh yes! I’m a pool shark!
She beats Alex and I all the time.
That really isn’t that hard...
Hey... I’m good.
Then it’s a challenge.
Brad stands up and Scully follows.
So Knowle, we don’t know a lot about you.
What do you want to know?
Well, I’ve always been curious what
you do at the Pentagon. I mean, once
I was snooping in there and came across
classified files and stuff. I was just
wondering if you-
-I think he wants you to be his new informant.
No! I’m just curious what he does there.
I’m not trying to get any information.
(lowers his voice and talks just to Knowle)
Unless you know something...
Defense strategy. Planning for the
worst case scenario should our country
be hit by terrorist, wars, or what have you.
I frequently assist the President.
So you’re like the Secretary of Defense?
Have you ever talked to a terrorist?
Yes, quite a few.
Is that scary?
It’s my job.
Do people actually work at
the Department of Defense?
Do you know the President’s home number?
Have you ever prank called him?
Does he know your number?
Does he call you often?
Advice on what?
Well, last week it was should he
declare war with 1.4 billion Chinese.
And what did you say?
I told him that was a stupid idea
and that he shouldn’t threaten them.
What did he say?
That I better call President Lou
and fix the problem.
Does the public know about this?
No, but now you do.
Were you not supposed to tell anyone?
Then why did you?
Honestly, I didn’t realize I was
telling such information because
you have been asking non-stop and
you caught me off guard.
You’ve never been a POW have you?
No, but I’ve been through SERE.
Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape.
Was that scary?
It was intense.
Knowle’s cell phone rings.
You can go ahead and get that.
I was going to anyway.
He picks up.
Everyone watches him as he listens to the other
person on the line.
Maybe it’s the President.
(after a beat)
I will be in first thing.
He hangs up.
Was that the President?
No. Secretary of Defense, Heller.
What did he want?
I have to go to the White House
first thing tomorrow morning.
But it’s a weekend.
C’est la vie.
I don’t know French, just Russian.
Tee poni-mai-ish rooskie ya-zeek?
You know Russian?!
Studied it in college.
So now you’re trying to be me?
Sasha... you’re not the only
person in the world who knows Russian.
He also knows Chinese.
Among many others.
Is that because of your job?
Did you travel around a lot
when you were growing up? (beat)
Do you come from a military family?
No. I grew up in Texas and stayed there
until I went to boarding school in New York.
(beat) Not a military family either.
I knew he was a troublemaker, that’s
why he went to a boarding school. Only
people with problems go there.
Doggett looks at him offended.
I went to a boarding school.
So did I.
So did Brad.
Oh my god, I’m surrounded...
There’s nothing wrong with them.
Scully and Brad come back.
Well, he kicked my ass.
She sits down next to Doggett.
Anyone else up for a game?
If you kicked Scully’s bum and
she kicks mine... I don’t think so.
Brad shrugs his shoulders and sits down.
So what have we been talking about?
The deep secrets of The Pentagon.
Say Brad... do you know
the President’s home number?
Brad looks at him confused. Why would he know
INT. KNOWLE ROHRER’S HUMMER – MORNING
SATURDAY, MARCH 18
Knowle drives up to the White House gates and
a guard approaches his Hummer. He rolls down his window and show him
his Department of Defense credentials. The guard checks it over, hands
it back and makes a note of his entry onto the premises.
Welcome back, Mr. Rohrer.
He waves him on as the gates open.
INT. THE OVAL OFFICE – THE WHITE HOUSE
President Logan sits on his couch across from
James Heller, the Secretary of Defense. A secretary enters the office.
Mr. President, Knowle Rohrer from
the Department of Defense is here.
Thank you Carol, send him in.
Yes, Mr. President.
She leaves the office and a moment later Knowle
enters. The President and Heller stand up and shake his hand.
Please, have a seat Mr. Rohrer.
Logan motions towards the couch in the middle
of the office. Knowle nods his head and sits down on the couch. Heller
sits across from him and Logan remains standing.
I’m assuming I’m here to
further discuss the Iran issue.
Logan smiles and shakes his head “no”.
I’m discussing that with my advisors.
Actually, you’re here on a much
lighter topic, Mr. Rohrer.
Knowle looks over at Heller.
What topic is that?
Heller smiles at him.
Your military advancement.
Knowle doesn’t know what to say about any military
advancement. He hasn’t served actively since the first Gulf War ended.
You’ve shown great military leadership.
Excellent strategy planning. (beat)
You stand out above our finest.
You’ve been promoted to Master Sergeant, E-8.
Thank you sir, it’s an honor.
You’re a great asset to our Military.
Knowle shows his appreciation, be deep inside
he can’t help but be suspicious of this military promotion. Especially
such a large promotion. From Corporal E-4 to Master Sergeant E-8.
Your new tags will be delivered to you.
Knowle nods his head, but remains suspicious.
May I ask what brought on this promotion?
You must be the first to question
a promotion, Mr. Rohrer.
Don’t get me wrong, Mr. President,
I’m honored. I just haven’t served
actively since after the first Gulf War.
Logan sits down.
My advisors strongly believe that
war with Iran is inevitable.
What about you? What do you think of that?
I agree with them. I am, after all,
the President of the United States.
(beat) Having you on board during
this time will help our defense.
At Master Sergeant status, you’ll have
more say against what others believe.
I thought we cleared up the Iran
issue yesterday, Mr. President.
Events happened over night.
They bombed our Embassy in Tehran.
I will not stand here and do
nothing as these people kill
the American citizens.
A terrorist attack is no reason
to go in there and be at war with
an entire country, Mr. President.
This is my decision, and it’s why
we need you at a higher rank.
Knowle nods his head, it’s too late for him
to do anything to change the President’s mind.
All right. What do you need
from me, Mr. President?
Right now, we don’t need your assistance.
Knowle eyes him suspiciously. They call him
in here on a Saturday morning just to promote him to Master Sergeant
and then they don’t even need him? There has to be something else.
Something they’re not telling him.
EXT. THE WHITE HOUSE
Knowle makes his way out of the White House
and over to where his Hummer is parked. He gets in and lets out a
sigh. Something more is going on here, there’s no doubt in his mind.
He’s been called in to assist the President and his Cabinet on many
different occasions, specifically dealing with the Middle East. And
now, they only call him in for a promotion.
He’s about to start his car, when a note on
the front dash catches his attention. He picks it up and unfolds it.
“Thing’s aren’t as they seem, Master Sergeant.
Meet me at Memorial Park. We all have to keep our enemies closer.”
Knowle closes the note and looks around, trying
to see if he can spot who sent him this note. He only notices gardeners
working hard, and other White House staff.
His cell phone rings, once again stopping him
from starting his car. He picks up.
He waits a long beat as he listens to the person
on the other end. His face physically pales at the news he has just
received. Off his look...
EXT. DOGGETT & SCULLY’S HOUSE – DAY
Monica knocks on the front door and waits. A
moment later, Scully answers.
Come on in.
Scully moves to the side to let her in. Monica
stops in her tracks when she sees what Scully has done to the place,
specifically all the pictures hanging on the wall. John has never
hung pictures on his walls, just leaned them up against it.
Oh my god, he actually let
you hang pictures?
He had no choice. If I’m going
to live here, we’re going to have
to compromise. (beat) I got Buddy
on my side when we discussed it.
From down below, Buddy barks his acknowledgement.
The place looks great.
John also gave me creative
freedom to redecorate the guest
bathroom down here.
What are your big plans?
Well, I was thinking of pink.
I love pink and John doesn’t
have any pink. Nothing too over
the top at all, simple you know?
Maybe some wallpaper that’s nice,
with a trim of roses or something.
Sounds like a good idea.
I’m just worried that John’s
going to freak at the sight of pink.
It’s not exactly a “guy” color. (beat)
Unless you’re Mulder...
Oh well for him. I like pink.
Outside, Knowle’s Hummer pulls up into the driveway.
Well, let’s get started.
Scully starts to head towards the bathroom to
get a start on her project, but Monica stays behind, seeing Knowle
walking up to the door.
Mon? You coming?
Buddy looks in Monica’s direction and sees Knowle
too. He sits down, not wagging his tail as he would usually do upon
seeing a friend.
She leaves the house and meets Knowle before
he gets to the door. Scully watches them through the open door, wondering
what’s going on. She sees Knowle and he seems upset. Monica hugs him.
EXT. DOGGETT & SCULLY’S HOUSE – CON’T
Knowle wipes a tear from his eye.
I don’t know what to do. I
should’ve been there.
These things happen. It’s
not your fault, Knowle.
She pulls away from him and looks at him in
You need to get down there. Be
there with her. (beat) I know
you feel at a loss, and that’s
normal, ok? (beat) Do you want
me to come down with you?
Knowle shakes his head.
I’m hoping it won’t be that bad.
Monica nods her head, knowing he wants her there
Call me if you need anything.
Knowle nods. Tears remain in his eyes.
INT. DOGGETT & SCULLY’S HOUSE – CON’T
Scully and Buddy continue watching Monica and
Knowle from the foyer. Doggett comes up behind her with a sandwich
in his hand.
What’s going on? Did you get
Knowle over here to help?
No. He just came and Monica
went out to talk to him.
He takes a giant bite out of his sandwich.
Not sure, but he seems upset. (beat)
Which is interesting in a way.
Doggett looks at her oddly.
How is Knowle being upset “interesting”?
Interesting in that he comes to
Monica when he’s upset. (beat)
Just like when you called me one
night before we were together. (beat)
Remember? You were reflecting on bad
times so you called me over and when
I came you didn’t say much, but you
did tell me you loved me.
She looks back out at Monica and Knowle.
I’m curious as to how he knew she was here.
What do you mean?
It’s like they have a connection.
Doggett rolls his eyes.
Now you’re starting to
sound like Mulder.
He takes another bite of his sandwich.
Well how else do you explain
how he knew she was here?
Could’ve called her.
I don’t think so. (beat) I think
they are like us. You know?
Doggett gives her a doubtful look.
You know what I mean. When I was
in trouble, didn’t you have a feeling?
Doggett doesn’t answer. She’s right. When Scott
Williams took her, he had a bad feeling and couldn’t sleep. He ran
over to her place to check on her. He knows what connection she’s
(after a beat)
Yes, I did have a feeling. But
that doesn’t prove that Monica
and Knowle have that connection.
I mean, she’s the psychic.
But he found her.
She smiles at him.
(after a beat)
I bet you $100 that they’ll
get together. You know, romantically.
Scully smiles, the true romantic at heart. Doggett
laughs at her.
Oh please, Dana. They’re in the
“friend zone”. Thinking that they’ll
get together like we are, is crazy.
Then what do you have to lose?
Fine. Let’s make it $500.
They shake hands and Scully looks down at Buddy.
Bud, you’re our witness.
Buddy barks his acknowledgement.
I am so going to win this. It’ll
be the first bet I ever win.
Scully smiles at him and looks back out and
Monica and Knowle as Doggett walks back to the kitchen. She watches
as Monica and Knowle exchange some more words. She hugs him again,
giving him a kiss on the cheek. After a moment he leaves and Monica
comes back inside the house.
Is everything all right?
I hope so.
She closes the front door.
His mother is in the hospital.
Off her worried look...
TIME CUT TO:
INT. HOSPITAL – McALLEN, TEXAS – THAT NIGHT
The elevator doors open on the third floor of
the hospital and Knowle makes his way out. He just arrived in McAllen
after flying all day, and with delays for weather which did nothing
to calm him. He finds a doctor.
Excuse me, I’m looking for the
doctor who’s treating Naomi Rohrer.
I am. (beat) You’re her son?
Yes, Knowle. How is she?
I’m afraid she’s not doing very
well. She was admitted earlier
today. A heart attack. We’ve done
the best we can to help her, but
she’s very weak and not recovering
like we’d like to see.
Knowle takes his words in, wishing they were
Is she awake?
We have her sleeping right now,
but you can go and sit with her.
Knowle nods his head.
What room is she in?
ICU 155. Just down the hall.
Who brought her here?
The doctor looks at the chart.
Uh... Gary Rohrer.
Knowle freezes upon hearing his father’s name.
Seventeen years ago, Knowle had his father put away for the abuse
and crimes he did to his mother, and the abuse that was inflicted
upon himself as a child.
Is he still here?
In the waiting room.
I don’t want him to see her.
The doctor nods his head and Knowle makes his
way to the waiting room.
INT. WAITING ROOM – CON’T
A man sits alone on a couch in the waiting room.
He is large, similar in his build to Knowle. He has a beard that is
graying with age. His eyes are dark, and he’s lost some hair on the
top of his head. Knowle stands in the waiting room doorway looking
at his father. Gary Rohrer, the man who hurt his mother more times
than he can even recall. The man he sent away to prison for his crimes,
who shouldn’t be out yet. It’s only been seventeen years, when he
was put away for twenty.
Knowle enters the room. He’s probably going
to hear the bullshit that the legal system allows from these criminals
for their reason to be on parole, probation, or even let out because
“good time”. It’s been since Knowle was twenty-two years old since
he’s seen his father.
What are you doing here, Gary?
Anger is in his voice. He knows that this man
is responsible for his mother’s current condition. Somehow he is,
he feels it in his gut.
Gary looks up at him and stands up. He’s slightly
taller than Knowle, standing at six foot six inches tall. Barely taller,
but sometimes that can make all the difference.
-Don’t call me that, Gary.
I’m your father-
-You’ve never been a father to me.
(beat) Why are you here? Why are
you out of that cell I sent you to?
I’m out on good time.
Knowle rolls his eyes.
Let me guess, you’re a reformed
Christian now. Am I right?
The Lord has lead me down a path of-
-Save it for someone who believes
that bullshit. (beat) You’re not
a reformed anything and you know
it. (beat) Why are you in McAllen?
Gary eyes Knowle carefully. He knows his son
I came to apologize to my wife-
-She’s not your wife.
Knowle glares at him.
I know, but she was. (beat) I
came to apologize for all the
wrong I did to her, and you.
And how did she end up here?
Gary sits down on the couch and looks up at
Have a seat.
Knowle doesn’t respond to him, continuing his
stance, now looking down at him.
Gary nods his head after a beat.
Naomi didn’t want to speak to me,
so I left. (beat) She was about
to shut the door when she collapsed.
(beat) She was having a heart attack,
so I brought her here.
Knowle looks down at his father. Does he really
want him to believe that he was just going to leave without her talking
to him? Knowle’s not a fool and knows his father well... especially
what angers him the most. If his mother refused to talk to him, she
was trying to take control of the situation. Gary would never allow
that to happen, nor does he take rejection well.
Do you really think I believe
that bullshit? I know you, Gary.
(beat) I want you to leave this
hospital right now.
Gary stands up, face to face with Knowle.
I love your mother, son. I didn’t
do anything to harm her. (beat)
Don’t you ever tell me what to do
again. You’re mother would want me here.
Get out or I’m getting security
and they’ll escort you out of here.
(beat) I’ve already told the doctor
not to let you see her.
They’ve let me in before, and
they’ll let me in again.
Knowle glares at him, wishing he could go back
in time and make sure his father’s sentence was harsher and without
the opportunity of parole or getting out on “good time”. A “reformed
Christian” is a bullshit excuse made by most criminals to get out.
It’s a fucking joke that this government believes in these lies of
All I have to do is pull out my
Department of Defense credentials
and they’ll throw you back into that
cell for the rest of your pathetic life.
Gary smirks at him.
I see so much of myself in you.
He knows that is the one thing in life that
Knowle hates, the fact that he is a part of this man. Gary tries to
get to Knowle, get under his skin and let him unleash the anger that
Knowle feels for him.
(after a beat)
His intensity lets his father know he’s not
going to win this one. After a beat, Gary starts to walk off.
He stops in the waiting room doorway and turns
around to face Knowle.
No matter how much you try to
deny it, son, you will always
have a part of me with you.
You can’t deny who you came from.
(beat) Tell your mother I send
my very best.
He turns and leaves. Tears fill in Knowle’s
eyes, wishing he never had a father. He takes a deep breath and composes
himself as he leaves the waiting room. He stops in the hallway and
sees his father get in the elevator. Once the doors close, he makes
his way to the ICU to find his mother’s room.
INT. ICU 155 (NAOMI ROHRER’S HOSPITAL ROOM)
The room is dimly lit as Naomi rests in her
hospital bed. Monitors softly beep, keeping track of her vitals. Knowle
stands in the doorway, not wanting to believe this is happening to
her, but at the same time realizing that this may be the last time
he sees his mother.
A nurse comes up to him.
You can sit with her. She’s
The nurse smiles at him warmly. She’s seen this
too many times in her life already. Knowle nods his head and slowly
enters the room, going to his mother’s bedside.
He takes hold of her hand, feeling how cold
she is. He pulls the blankets up on her more to keep her warm. He
quietly sits down next to her, never letting go of her hand. Tears
come to his eyes as he looks at his mother. He wishes more than anything
he could’ve stopped his father from ever seeing her again. She’s been
through too much pain in her life. It breaks his heart to see her
like this because of that man.
He wipes the tears from his eyes with his free
hand, and notices some bruising on his mother’s wrists. No doubt they
are from his father and what ever he tried to do to her. He was always
forceful with her. She always had bruises on her arms from when he’d
hit her, or grab her when he got angry. And now it’s happening all
over again. At least he got rid of that son-of-a-bitch.
Another tear falls from his eye, hitting Naomi’s
Naomi’s eyes slowly open and she looks over
at Knowle, who hasn’t noticed she’s awake. She smiles at him.
Knowle looks up, shocked to hear that she’s
awake. He smiles at her.
She gently squeezes his hand, showing her appreciation.
Of course I did.
He doesn’t want to tell her that he didn’t want
to bring anyone in hopes that it wouldn’t be as bad as the doctors
say it is.
I know you wanted to bring her.
(beat) She’s worried for you.
Monica. (beat) She was in my dream.
Knowle realizes who she’s talking about.
Naomi nods her head and allows a memory from
the past to enter her mind. She smiles.
I remember when you were young.
You had a big crush on her.
You never could admit it because
you were too much of a boy... and
had your big tough guy attitude to
live up to. And John would’ve made fun of you.
I don’t think he’s changed much then.
You still like her?
Knowle smiles and nods his head.
Tell her. (beat) She’d love to
know you feel the same way too.
She smiles. Knowle watches her for a moment,
glad to see that she can smile through all of this.
(after a beat)
He looks down and she watches him. His mind
filled with regret and guilt for everything that has happened to her.
In his mind he could never do enough to help her. Not then, not now,
not ever. Negative thinking gets the best of him.
Naomi shakes her head.
I’m sorry I couldn’t keep him away.
He wipes tears from his eyes again. He doesn’t
look up at her.
I should’ve done something to
stop him. I should’ve-
-Knowle, this is not your fault. I
don’t want you to be blaming yourself
for any of this. (beat) Dying is a
part of life. (beat) I have no regrets
in my life. I wouldn’t change a day.
He hurt you...
Yes, he did. But I still wouldn’t
change a day because I have you.
Knowle looks up at her.
You helped me through the worst of
times, even if you knew it at the
time or not. (beat) I don’t want
to hear you blame yourself for what
happened. (beat) I’m an old woman.
I’ve lived my life.
She looks into his eyes, knowing it breaks his
heart to see her in this condition because of his father. There’s
nothing either one of them can do to change the facts.
You did nothing wrong. (beat) I
know you blame yourself for things
you have no control over. You do
that because you care so much and
you wish there was a way to turn
back time and fix everything that
goes wrong. (beat) But none of this
is your fault. All right?
I just wish there was something...
You are here. That’s all that
matters to me now.
Knowle nods his head.
I want you to get your rest.
You’ve been flying all day.
Knowle lets out a little laugh. Here his mother
is, in the hospital, and she’s telling him to get his rest.
Knowle smiles at her.
So long as you rest too. You
need it more than I do.
She nods her head and gets comfortable in her
bed. Knowle leans back in the chair. Rest won’t come easily for him
tonight. He’ll be in and out of sleep.
He watches her fall asleep, his mind continues
to think. Thinking about his life, his father. Trying to come to the
realization that his mother knows she is coming to her end and that
he should be prepared too.
Off him, we...
INT. NAOMI’S HOSPITAL ROOM – MORNING
SUNDAY, MARCH 19
Knowle’s eyes open upon hearing his mother talking
with another woman in the room. He squints his eyes at the bright
morning light coming in through the window. He looks around, and by
the other side of his mother’s bed is Monica.
Daffodils are my favorite.
I thought they would
help lift your spirit.
Monica smiles at her, and glances over at Knowle,
noticing he’s now awake. She smiles at him.
Naomi looks over at Knowle, who sits up straight
from how he was sleeping in the chair that night.
She brought me daffodils.
Knowle looks at Monica. He should’ve known she
When did you get here?
A couple minutes ago.
Knowle nods his head.
A nurse enters.
(to Knowle and Monica)
Why don’t you two get some
breakfast. It’s the most
important meal of the day.
Knowle stands up.
All right. I’ll be back.
He leans down and kisses his mother on the forehead.
(whispers to Naomi)
I’ll make sure he eats.
Naomi nods her head as Monica smiles warmly.
She heads to the door where Knowle is.
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY – CON’T
Knowle and Monica walk down the hall in silence
for a few moments.
How is she? The doctors wouldn’t
tell me since I’m not family.
He looks down at her.
(after a beat)
He told me it didn’t look good
for her. (beat) I think she knows.
Monica looks up at him, sensing his guilt for
not being able to keep his father behind bars longer. She takes hold
of his hand.
You did everything you could.
I know... it’s just... in times
like these, my mind can’t help
but think of the “what ifs”.
They get into the elevator and the door closes.
Knowle hits the button for the ground level.
I’m glad you came. (beat) I
wanted you to come... but I
didn’t want to admit that my
gut was telling me this was bad.
He starts to hold back his tears.
(trying not to cry)
I don’t want to lose her, Monica.
He lets go of her hand and wipes his tears away.
Monica gives him a hug, allowing him a shoulder to cry on. He wraps
his arms around her, giving in to his emotions. She rubs him on his
back to comfort him.
(after a beat; soft)
No one wants to lose the people
they love, it just happens. (beat)
We have to keep going, Knowle. Move
on and live our lives. (beat) She
wants that for you.
He holds onto her tightly.
I know you fear the inevitable.
But there’s nothing to fear.
Death is just another form of
life that everyone goes to.
(beat) She’ll never be forgotten
and she’ll live on because of
the memories she leaves with all
of us. (beat) One day you’ll tell
your children about her and that
memory that you have, you’ll pass
it on to them, keeping her alive
through them. Through the memories.
Knowle wipes more of his tears away.
You’ll tell them how beautiful
she was. How strong she was. And
how, despite the bad things that
happened to her, she loved life,
and moved on to another stage of
her life with people around her
who love and care for her.
She pulls away from him and holds his face in
She loves you very much, Knowle.
She knows that you love her and
that you’ve always done all that
you could for her.
She runs her hand through his hair, then pulls
him down and gives him a kiss on his forehead.
(after a beat)
She wouldn’t change a day of
her life. (beat) She told me that.
She looks at the good more
so than the bad.
Knowle nods his head.
(after a beat)
You’re strong, just like her.
You’ll make it through this.
The elevator doors open on the ground level
and they get out.
She said you were in
her dream last night.
She said you were worried for me.
I was. (beat) I caught the
next flight out after you.
It had a stop over in Dallas,
and my next flight didn’t
leave there until early this morning.
Knowle stops walking, as does Monica.
I’m glad you came.
She smiles at him and puts her arm around his
waste, and starts walking again.
I knew you wanted me to come.
Knowle bends down and kisses the top of her
head as they enter the hospital cafeteria.
TIME CUT TO:
INT. HOSPITAL – ICU – LATE MORNING
Knowle and Monica make their way out of the
elevator, heading towards his mother’s hospital room.
John having a pink bathroom.
He shakes his head and laughs a bit.
He probably saw that coming, huh?
I don’t think he minds. (beat)
She even hung up all his pictures.
Good for her.
Their conversation is halted by doctors running
into the hospital room his mother is in. They stop and watch for a
moment as a crash cart is wheeled into the room.
Monica looks up at Knowle, making sure he’s
all right. His eyes are fixated on the room. He knows this can’t be
good at all. She moves in closer to him for support. He doesn’t look
at her, but he takes hold of her hand.
(softly; after a beat)
You should sit down, Knowle.
He doesn’t say a word and allows her to lead
him over to a chair in the hallway. She helps him sit down and kneels
in front of him. She looks up at him. Their eyes don’t meet. His mind
is trapped, thinking of what’s going on in that room. No, not thinking,
knowing. Knowing that his mother is passing on.
Monica watches him as tears fill his eyes. She
takes hold of his hand with her other, both of her hands now holding
onto his. She can only imagine what he’s going through. She’s never
lost anyone this close to her before. She looks over towards Naomi’s
room, just as a doctor exits and makes his way over to them. Bad news
is written on his face.
Knowle looks up at the doctor.
I’m afraid I have bad news...
Off this we...
EXT. McALLEN CEMETERY – DAY
FRIDAY, MARCH 24
The sky is covered in clouds and the ground
is wet from rain that fell before. Doggett and Scully stand listening
to the ceremony for Knowle’s mother. Next to them, Ma and Pa Doggett
listen on. Friends and family are all here. Knowle stands looking
down at his mother’s coffin that is about to be put into the ground.
Behind him, Monica watches on, standing next to Brad, who takes hold
of her hand. Monica’s eyes fix on Knowle, feeling his pain from the
loss, knowing how much this has hurt him the past few days. Tears
come to her eyes as she thinks of the present loss, the losses of
the past, and the losses that will happen. Her heart aches at her
The priest talks on about the life of Naomi
Elizabeth Rohrer, a wonderful mother, and caring woman. Who, despite
many hardships, lived each day to it’s full potential.
Knowle listens on. His mind wanders about what
his mother told him. She had no regrets in her life. None at all.
She could easily say that knowing that her time was upon her. He thinks
of his own life and how he hasn’t accomplished much in terms of his
personal life. Sure, he’s succeeded and is successful with the Department
of Defense, yet he is alone. Has no one with him, all because he was
too afraid of what could happen. Afraid of commitment, when it was
all he really wanted.
INT. KNOWLE ROHRER’S APARTMENT – DAY
SUNDAY, MARCH 26
Knowle is sits on his couch going through mail
that collected while he was in Texas. He opens a package from the
military. His new dog tags with his new rank of Master Sergeant E-8.
He looks down at them. It feels like ages ago since he got that promotion
and he had forgotten how suspicious he was of the President and the
Secretary of Defense. He tosses them on his coffee table and opens
more of his mail. A sympathy card from John and Dana that was sent
after they heard the news. He sets the card down.
His mother had so much in her life and no regrets
or “what ifs” when she died. His mind wanders through his life. He
was with Shannon for many years and that lead both of them nowhere.
He’s feared a lot in his life, despite his mother telling him not
to fear. He feared what could happen if he actually listened to his
heart instead of the irrational fears of his mind.
His eyes find the dog tags once again.
The alien colonization he read about in November
while snooping around the Pentagon’s top secret files crosses his
mind. His military promotion has to be because of that. If they were
to strike today he knows he wouldn’t be satisfied with his life. He’s
left too many things unsaid. Unlike his mother, he has too many “what
His thoughts are interrupted by his phone ringing.
He picks up.
He listens to the person on the other end.
(after a beat)
What’s this about?
He listens, and his facial expression shows
that he doesn’t get an answer.
(after a beat) Yes, sir.
He hangs up the phone and sits back on his couch,
a worried expression on his face.
TIME CUT TO:
INT. MONICA’S APARTMENT – LATE EVENING
Monica is in her kitchen cooking a late dinner.
Something simple before she relaxes for the rest of the night.
There is a knock on her door and she goes to
answer it. She smiles when she sees Knowle.
Hi. (beat) Can I...
She nods her head and moves to the side to let
him into her apartment.
How are you doing?
She senses his worry.
I’m holding up.
Monica watches him, knowing there is more on
his mind. She could easily tap into it, but she’d rather not. She’d
rather hear what’s on his mind from him.
What brings you here?
He digs into his pockets and pulls out his newly
issued dog tags. He looks down at them.
With everything that’s happened
these past few days, I... I forgot to
tell you, or anyone, that I got a promotion.
Knowle looks up at her and hands his dog tags
over to her. She takes them and reads them.
She looks up at him and sees that his expression
is still worry.
This isn’t good?
I’ve been called to active duty.
The smile leaves her face. This is not good
news at all.
(knowing the answer)
What does that mean?
I have to report to Camp
Lejeune in twenty-four hours.
Monica looks down at the tags again. Master
Sergeant Knowle Rohrer.
They’ll say it’s war with Iran,
but it’s not. (beat) Alien colonization.
Monica hands his tags back to him, but he shakes
his head and doesn’t take them.
They’re only purpose is to identify
a dead Marine. If I don’t have them,
I’m more likely to survive when they
come. (beat) I want you to have them.
A way to remember your strength, the
strength you gave me, and...
He looks down, not sure if he should proceed
with his next comment. Monica watches him, waiting.
(after a beat)
As a way for you to always
remember the man who loves you
with every ounce of his being.
He looks at Monica, not sure if she’s ready
for his words, but he may never have another time to tell her.
I don’t know if you’re ready for
what I said, but I can’t leave here,
I can’t risk not ever letting you
know how I feel for you. (beat) This
war... we can’t win it and I may
never see you again. (beat)
I love you, Monica Isabella Reyes.
Tears sting her eyes as she feels what he is
saying to be true.
I never could tell you before
because I was afraid, of what I
don’t know. Maybe I thought I couldn’t
bring you the happiness you deserve
in life. Maybe I thought-
He’s cut off by her. Not with words, rather
by her motions as she approaches him. He watches her, expecting merely
a hug, but instead she kisses him. Not a friend kissing a friend,
rather someone who feels the same way he does for her, only she’s
at a loss for words. His strong hands taking hold of her back and
bringing her closer to him. She wraps her arms around his neck, not
wanting to let go. Tears fall from her eyes and she pulls away from
him, resting her head on his shoulder.
(soft, finally finding her words)
I love you too, Knowle.
She doesn’t bother to wipe her tears away. She
shuts her eyes, sensing him, feeling his heart. She too feels as if
this could be the last she ever sees of him. He’s right, this war
against the alien colonist cannot be won. It’s impossible. They’re
far too superior.
Always follow you’re heart,
it’s never wrong. Trust your
instincts and never give up hope.
Knowle shakes his head “no”. Her words sound
like the last words she’ll say to him.
No... I can’t go. I
can’t leave you. If-
-I don’t know why, and I
don’t understand, but you
have to. I sense this. It’s
how it has to be. (beat)
Everything happens for a reason.
He pulls away from her and looks at her. He
trusts her. He may not trust why he has to go, but he trusts her.
When they come, I’ll be here
with you. (beat) I promise.
He looks at her with all seriousness.
Whatever it takes, I will be back here.
Monica nods her head, tears fall from her face
once again. She can’t read into the situation like she’d want to.
She can’t foresee what’s going to happen beyond June 11th, and that
frightens her. Maybe everything is unorganized and her mind can’t
make sense of it, but Grandmama once told her that a psychic cannot
see beyond her own death.
Off of them, we...
EXT. CAMP LEJEUNE – DAY
MONDAY, MARCH 27
Knowle pulls his Hummer onto the base and parks
it in a designated area. He gets out, grabs a duffel bag from the
back and makes his way to the main building to report for duty.
He looks around. No one seems to be aware of
what is going to happen to this world once June 11, 2006 arrives.
In the background he can hear the band playing the Marines Hymn. Such
an eerie, upbeat, proud song for what’s going to happen to everyone
here. Being sent into battle to die first and leave the ones they
A man approaches him, and by the stripes on
his uniform sleeve, he’s a Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, an
E-9. The man is about six foot tall, reddish-brown hair, and looks
like he hasn’t shaved recently.
Master Sergeant Rohrer?
I’m Charles Scully, Sergeant
Major of the Marine Corps. (beat)
The Generals are expecting you. (beat)
They can’t wait to know what you know.
Charles gives Knowle a look, that lets him know
he’s not alone in knowing what will happen to this world on June 11th.
I’ve been sent to help you settle
in here at Camp Lejeune. (beat)
General Roger Thompson gave me a
message to deliver to you.
He said: Keep your enemies closer.
Knowle looks at him, remembering back to the
note he received right after he left the White House after he got
his promotion to Master Sergeant.
“Keep your enemies closer.” The phrase
makes more sense to him now that he’s here. The enemies are within
their own military and now is a time to be more careful than ever.
After all, they have an advantage over everyone. On the island, Monica
mentioned “mind warfare”. Perhaps these Generals want to “know what
he knows” for their own personal gain.
It’s obvious he’s not alone with the knowledge
he has. But he better be careful with this knowledge. They all should.
Follow me this way, sir.
Charles turns and heads off towards the barracks
where Knowle will be staying.
Off of Knowle’s look of understanding why he
had to come here, and the information he can now try to find about
the enemy, we...
