Summary: Monica faces the events that happened in Corona, New Mexico in 1971.

Previously on "Fox & Rat": Carlos Reyes has gotten into a mess with his arch rival, Chino Gonzalez, over guns and Monica has found herself caught in the middle. Luckily for her, it was revealed that Robert Comer, her former New Orleans FBI partner, is only working undercover with Carlos and Chino. But back at Headquarters, no one knows where they are after Skinner's New Mexico SWAT team was ambushed by the deadly and menacing, Enrique Reyes, who is responsible for the bloody little massacre of Corona, New Mexico in 1971, including the deaths of Monica's biological parents: Alejandro and Carolina de Velázquez. And now, the only man who knew the location of Chino Gonzalez has attempted suicide to keep quiet, leaving Brad worried for the future of Monica Reyes...

FADE IN:

INT. CHINO’S WAREHOUSE – NEW MEXICO – 3:30AM

MAY 10, 2005

Chino Gonzalez looks at Robert Comer, having just hung up the phone with John Doe who was sent to kill Brad Follmer.

CHINO GONZALEZ
He was unsuccessful. The Feds have him.

Chino starts to walk away from Comer. Comer turns to face him as he leaves.

ROBERT COMER
What does that mean for us?

Chino stops and turns to face Comer.

CHINO GONZALEZ
There was a trace on the call.
(beat) Once my partner shows up,
we’ll move out of here and they’ll
never find us.

ROBERT COMER
Partner?

CHINO GONZALEZ
Yes, I had to break him out of prison
yesterday. (beat) My only warning to
you: don’t cross him and you’ll live.
(beat) He kills with no mercy.

Chino walks away, leaving Comer to wonder who the hell Chino’s partner is.

CUT TO:

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM – FBI HEADQUARTERS – 5:40AM EST

Paramedics rush into the room where Scully is trying to save John Doe’s life.

PARAMEDIC #1
Ma’am, please move.

Scully gets out of the way, and takes hold of Brad’s arm to move him out of their way as well.

BRAD FOLLMER
(demanding; to paramedics)
That man needs to live, he has
valuable information that we need.

The paramedics don’t even acknowledge him and work on getting John Doe stable and in their control.

DANA SCULLY
(softly to Brad)
Let’s get out of their way, Brad.

Brad doesn’t make eye contact with her. He keeps his eyes locked on John Doe: the only man who knows where Monica is. Scully starts to go to the door, pulling Brad with her. He slowly follows.

INT. HALLWAY – CON’T

Scully takes Brad down the hallway, moving him away from the room.

BRAD FOLLMER
If we loose him, Dana, we may never
find Monica. I... (beat) I don’t want
to loose her again.

DANA SCULLY
(soft)
I know, Brad. They’re working on it.
(beat) But you need to keep it together.
We can’t loose you because of this. (beat)
I’m going to check up on the location that
he gave us and compare it to the location on
the trace. All right?

Brad nods his head.

DANA SCULLY
What are you going to do?

She needs to keep him focused on his job.

BRAD FOLLMER
I need to stay with them, here.
If they can get him stable and
talking, I need to be here to question.

Scully nods her head.

DANA SCULLY
I’ll update you the moment
I get confirmation on the location.

BRAD FOLLMER
Thank you.

Scully puts her hand on his shoulder, hoping to give him strength to deal with this. She walks off, leaving him alone in the hallway looking in on his only hope for finding Monica.

CUT TO:

INT. FBI FIELD OFFICE – ALBUQUERQUE, NM – 3:45AM MT

Skinner stands in the office talking to Agent Wolfe.

AGENT WOLFE
Reports came back about the helicopter,
sir. (beat) It was shot down by a sniper.

WALTER SKINNER
A sniper?

AGENT WOLFE
Yes, a sniper gun was found on
a hill, with a good view on the
location to observe everything
that went down, sir. (beat) We’re
running the prints now.

WALTER SKINNER
Let me know when you find out
who it belonged to.

AGENT WOLFE
Yes sir.

Skinner’s phone rings and Agent Wolfe walks away.

WALTER SKINNER
(into phone)
This is Skinner.

ALVIN KERSH (FILTERED)
This is Deputy Director Kersh.
(beat) How are things in New Mexico?

WALTER SKINNER
In all honesty, sir. (beat)
The shit’s hit the fan.

ALVIN KERSH
So I hear.

WALTER SKINNER
You know?

ALVIN KERSH
(anger in his voice)
Yes. We’re working on the
same case here. One of Mr.
Gonzalez’s men tried to kill
A.D. Follmer. (beat) And Skinner,
moving in with SWAT tonight was
a big mistake.

Kersh’s words are filled with anger, especially the last part.

ALVIN KERSH
(anger boiling)
We’ve got a UC agent with them.
He’s been working them for six
months and you just compromised
his job. (beat) His name is Robert
Comer. He came to D.C. eight months
ago. Why were you not on top of everything?

WALTER SKINNER
(oh crap)
Sir, I’m... I...

ALVIN KERSH
I don’t want to hear your
excuses for not doing your
job, Mr. Skinner. (beat) I’m
sending Agent Comer’s file to
you so you and your men know who
he is and don’t make another mistake.
(beat) You will clear this situation
up or I’ll be having your badge
for my breakfast. (beat) Also,
Enrique Reyes might be involved
with Gonzalez.

WALTER SKINNER
Who’s that?

ALVIN KERSH
The man responsible for slaughtering
an entire town there in New Mexico.
(beat) He’s been in prison since ‘71
and we just received word that he
has escaped from the Ultra Max in
Florence, Colorado. (beat) We’re
bringing in Antonio Reyes to help us
out with this situation.

WALTER SKINNER
Antonio Reyes, sir? Isn’t he in prison?

ALVIN KERSH
Yes he is. I’m having him released
to help us on this situation. He
know more about Enrique Reyes than
anyone else I know. (beat) There will
be a meeting between all of us via
satellite. (beat) Has Agent Doggett arrived yet?

WALTER SKINNER
Not yet, sir.

ALVIN KERSH
He’ll stay there to help your end.

WALTER SKINNER
Yes, sir.

ALVIN KERSH
And Skinner, you better keep me
informed of your progress out there.

WALTER SKINNER
Yes, sir. I will.

The phone goes dead on the other end. Skinner has really created a situation. He takes a deep breath, to address the room of the newest information he has received.

WALTER SKINNER
(to everyone)
I need everyone’s attention! (beat)
I just received new information from
Headquarters that there is a UC agent
working this same case. His name is
Agent Robert Comer. His file is being
sent to us right now and you will all
learn his face so no mistakes happen.

Off Skinner addressing the room...

CUT TO:

INT. SING SING CORRECTIONAL FACILITY – NEW YORK – 6:00AM EST

Fox Mulder and Alex Krycek wait patiently for the guards to bring inmate Antonio Reyes to them. Tension is thick between Mulder and Krycek ever since Mulder confronted Krycek about his involvement in Scully and Monica’s disappearance, and kicked him out of the apartment claiming to never want to see him again. Unfortunately for Mulder, he still has to work with Krycek.

Mulder has no regret about kicking Krycek out. But it has been nagging him to know where Krycek is staying. He’s probably living with Marita, but Mulder doesn’t believe Marita would take him in. Not now. She needs her independence.

FOX MULDER
Where are you living now?

ALEX KRYCEK
(assholish)
Oh, is this the beginning of
a conversation, Mulder?

FOX MULDER
I’m simply wondering where you
are so I know to avoid that area.

ALEX KRYCEK
You’re little brother, Jeff, has
allowed me to crash at his place
for a while until I have time to
find my own apartment. (beat) After
all, you kicking me out came rather
unexpected.

FOX MULDER
”Unexpected”? Really? (beat) Come on
Krycek, you must have seen it coming.
Especially knowing you were stabbing
me and my friends in the back.

ALEX KRYCEK
I made a mistake. Can’t you just forgive
me and move on?

FOX MULDER
The day that Dana forgives you for
what you had her go through, and the
day Monica forgives you for the loss
of her and Brad’s unborn child, that
will be the day I forgive you, Krycek.

Mulder glares at him, just as two guards come through the doors with Antonio Reyes in their hands. Antonio sees Alex Krycek and glares at him. Krycek watches, a little scared because he is a Reyes Brother, and he’s glaring at him. But little does he know, but Antonio is the good brother doing time so he can get his name cleared and become a helpful aid for law enforcement. However, that doesn’t change how Antonio feels about Krycek. He’s spoken with his other brothers after Monica came back and knows about what happened. He’s even had a few chats with Brad about this punk too. He knows all that Krycek has done and does not like him one bit.

Lucky for Mulder, he knows that Antonio is a good person wanting to clear his name since Monica has talked about Antonio before to him.

CORRECTIONS OFFICER
We’ll need you to sign these release
forms, and then you’re free to go.

Mulder takes the forms and signs them, as does Krycek. Antonio looks at Krycek, watching him sign the forms to release him.

ALEX KRYCEK
(handing the forms over)
Thank you.

CORRECTIONS OFFICER
Not a problem. Good luck.

Mulder and Krycek take hold of Antonio and escort him out of the prison.

EXT. PRISON – CON’T

Once outside, Antonio breaks free of Krycek’s grasp and gives him a glare.

ALEX KRYCEK
Hey punk!

ANTONIO REYES
You touch me again and I’ll
kill you. (beat) And don’t
try to convince yourself that
I won’t because I will. (beat)
I know what you did to my sister.

Antonio glares at Krycek. Krycek looks to Mulder for help.

FOX MULDER
I agree with him.

Mulder glares at Krycek and puts Antonio into the back of the bucar, and he and Krycek get in the front, Mulder driving of course.

INT. CAR

Mulder starts the car and drives off.

FOX MULDER
Krycek, un-cuff him.

ALEX KRYCEK
He’s a prisoner.

FOX MULDER
Who’s going to help us.
(beat) Un-cuff him.

ALEX KRYCEK
No.

FOX MULDER
Alex, now is not the time
to make things difficult.

Mulder glares at him. Ever since he kicked Krycek out of the apartment, they have had this tension between one another. Mulder is sick of his bullshit and Krycek is sick of Mulder telling him what to do in the office.

ALEX KRYCEK
I’m not trying to be difficult.
I’m simply saying that it’s not
a good idea to un-cuff a criminal.
(beat) Especially since he just
threatened to kill me.

FOX MULDER
Then maybe I should put the cuffs
on you, is that what you’re saying?

ALEX KRYCEK
What?

FOX MULDER
You’re a criminal and you get
away with all sorts of-

ANTONIO REYES
-How about you both shut up and
listen to me. (beat) Enrique is
going to kill Monica and Carlos.
Don’t you think that’s a little
more important than fighting about
hand cuffs? (beat) Where are you
taking me anyway? D.C. is too far.

FOX MULDER
We’ll be taking you to the field
office in New York City, and via
satellite you’ll be aiding our
agents in D.C. and New Mexico.

ANTONIO REYES
Who will be in charge in those locations?

FOX MULDER
A.D. Follmer in D.C. and A.D.
Skinner out in New Mexico.

Antonio nods his head and sits back. The rest of the ride is in silence and Mulder and Krycek don’t want to talk to one another. They’d prefer to not work together, but they can’t help that.

CUT TO:

INT. CHINO’S WAREHOUSE – NEW MEXICO – 4:15AM MT

Comer is sitting at the table cleaning his gun while waiting for Chino’s partner to show up so they can get the hell out of there before the Feds find them. Chino comes up to him.

CHINO GONZALEZ
I want you to go get Monica and
Carlos. (beat) My partner is here.

ROBERT COMER
All right.

Comer puts his gun away, having just finished with it. He stands up and starts to head towards the stairs to go get Monica.

CHINO GONZALEZ
Get Carlos first.

ROBERT COMER
Does it really matter?

CHINO GONZALEZ
Yes.

ROBERT COMER
You do know that then I’d
have to drag him up the stairs
when I go to get his sister.
(beat) I don’t think that’s
a good idea. (beat) The two of
them could cause a lot of trouble.

Chino thinks about this. Comer is right, Carlos would cause a problem, and there’s no doubt Monica would be able to help out.

CHINO GONZALEZ
Fine. Get Monica first.

Comer nods his head and heads up the stairs.

INT. WAREHOUSE ROOM – CON’T

Monica is still tied up in the chair. She’s much calmer now, knowing that Comer isn’t on Chino’s side and that he’s undercover. Why wasn’t she able to see this before, especially with her ability? She’s been wondering this for a long time now and has come to the conclusion that she blocked it because of her job. And in all honesty, that’s not the kind of thing you want to block. This worries her since she could’ve killed him if she had the chance, and then she’d be in a world of shit for killing one of her own.

The door opens and Comer comes in. He shuts the door behind him and goes over to her. He starts to untie her.

MONICA REYES
Robert, what’s going on?

ROBERT COMER
Chino told me to come get you.
(beat) His partner is coming.

MONICA REYES
He doesn’t have a partner.

ROBERT COMER
I know, so I don’t know what
to expect from this. (beat) I’ve
done my homework on this guy,
and he’s never worked with a partner.

MONICA REYES
How long have you been doing this?

ROBERT COMER
I’ve been with them six months.

MONICA REYES
You mean with Carlos?

ROBERT COMER
I stumbled across Carlos when
he heard of my reputation with
other dealers. (beat) I wasn’t
supposed to make a deal with him
but it seemed right at the time.
(beat) Then Chino entered the picture
and Carlos told me about how Chino
wanted you. (beat) I knew you’d get
involved since Carlos is your brother,
so I stuck on the case.

MONICA REYES
Because of me?

ROBERT COMER
Yeah. (beat) I haven’t heard from you
in years, Moni. I didn’t know what to
think. (beat) Then Carlos tells me you’ve
been missing and-

MONICA REYES
-Now is not the time to catch
up on old times, Robert.

Comer looks up into her eyes as he finishes untying her feet from the chair.

ROBERT COMER
I know...

He stands and goes behind her to untie her hands. When he’s done with that, Monica stands up.

MONICA REYES
What are we going to do?

ROBERT COMER
Go down there and see what’s
going on. (beat) We know nothing
about this situation now.

Comer takes hold of Monica’s hand and pulls her closer to him. He looks deep into her soft brown eyes.

ROBERT COMER
(soft)
Like I said before, Moni... I’m
not going to let anything bad
happen to you. (beat) I promise.

Tears fill Monica’s eyes, as she feels what his words mean. He looks at her with a worried expression and pulls her into a much needed hug.

ROBERT COMER
Don’t worry, Monica.

He kisses the top of her head.

ROBERT COMER
I won’t let anything bad happen to you.

MONICA REYES
I know...

She pulls away from him and collects herself, wiping her tears away. Comer squeezes her hand and gives her a reassuring look. Neither one of them wants to be up here any longer because Chino will get suspicious and who knows who could die then...

INT. WAREHOUSE – CON’T

Comer lets go of Monica’s hand and takes hold of her arm as he walks her down the stairs and over to the room where Carlos is being held.

Chino watches as the door to the warehouse opens and Enrique Reyes enters. All of Chino’s goons move out of his way. Enrique is a very large man, with a mean look on his face, long dark hair pulled into a ponytail, and a muscular build to frighten anyone. The only weapon he has on him is his knife, and it looks similar to the knife he used back in 1971 when he killed all those innocent people in Corona, New Mexico, including Monica and Carlos’s biological parents: Alejandro and Carolina de Velázquez.

CHINO GONZALEZ
Enrique, it is so good to see you.

Chino comes up to him, as if they are best friends.

CHINO GONZALEZ
I hope it wasn’t too much trouble
for you to get here.

ENRIQUE REYES
Where are they?

Chino freezes when Enrique speaks. His words are not threatening, but they come out that way nonetheless.

CHINO GONZALEZ
They are here. (beat) Did you-

ENRIQUE REYES
They’re all dead. Don’t worry.
(beat) Now give them to me.

CHINO GONZALEZ
They are coming. My right hand
man is bring them right now.

ENRIQUE REYES
Good.

Comer comes over with Carlos and Monica. Enrique’s eyes become fixated on them. For years he has sat in his isolation cell plotting out how to get what was taken from him so many years ago. To him, Carlos and Monica are his tokens, his only memory and way to relive Corona.

Enrique passes Chino without a word and goes over to Carlos and Monica. He says nothing as he looks down at them. His eyes stop at Monica and he moves in closer to her.

ENRIQUE REYES
(whisper)
You look just like your mother, Monica...

His whisper sends frightening chills through Monica. Carlos watches carefully. He’s not even sure Monica knows who this man is. He doesn’t even know if she knows about what happened in Corona like he does.

MONICA REYES
(frightened and can’t hide it)
Who are you?

Enrique smiles at her. Comer watches him, trying to figure out who this guy is. He doesn’t recognize him from any files he’s studied to get to know everyone Chino or Carlos have worked with.

CHINO GONZALEZ
We better get going. The Feds
are on to us, Enrique.

Enrique doesn’t look away from Monica. His eyes pierce into her.

ENRIQUE REYES
(quietly)
No, Chino... they are on to you.

Without a warning of anything coming, Enrique pulls his knife out and throws it right at Chino. The knife enters his skull, killing him instantly.

Enrique turns back to look at Comer.

ENRIQUE REYES
I will take them from here.

Comer looks over at Chino, who is lying dead on the ground with Enrique’s knife in his skull.

ROBERT COMER
(tight grip on Monica)
No.

Enrique cocks an eyebrow.

ENRIQUE REYES
No? (beat) I don’t think you
know who I am... I came here
for them and I will leave here
with them, and you can’t stop me.

Enrique punches Comer, and he falls to the floor.

MONICA REYES
No!

She’s about to bend down to check on Comer when Enrique grabs her arm. She snaps a look back at him, a frightened look. Enrique’s eyes tell her that she better listen to him.

ROBERT COMER
What are you going to do with them?

Enrique smiles down at Comer.

ENRIQUE REYES
Agent Robert Comer... it is
none of your concern.

Comer pales. How the hell does Enrique know that he is with the FBI?

Enrique smiles again.

ENRIQUE REYES
You will not give me a problem,
Agent Comer, if you want to live.
(beat) I give you my promise, I will
not hurt them. (beat) I just want
what is mine.

He takes a strong hold on Carlos and Monica’s arms. So strong that even Carlos can’t break free. Monica winces in pain as Enrique starts to leave with them. Monica looks back at Comer, knowing that he wants to do something.

Comer gets up from the ground and starts to come over to Enrique, his hand on his weapon.

MONICA REYES
Robert, no!

He stops what he was about to do. Monica’s tone of warning was very serious, and her eyes tell him that he will die if he continues what he was going to do.

Enrique goes over to Chino’s body and pulls his knife out of his skull and cleans the blood off with Chino’s shirt.

ENRIQUE REYES
I trust you are a smart man,
Agent Comer. Do not follow me.

With his last words, Enrique leaves the warehouse with Carlos and Monica. Leaving Comer all alone with Chino’s goons, and it’s only a matter of time until one of them takes the lead and decides to eliminate Comer as a problem. They all know now that he is a federal agent.

Comer stands surrounded and one of the goons pulls out his gun.

CUT TO:

INT. ST. VINCENT’S HOSPITAL – WASHINGTON, D.C. – 6:49AM EST

Brad Follmer stands outside of the ER watching as doctors try their best to save John Doe. All his mind can think about is how if they loose this guy, they loose their chance at finding Monica before Chino and now Enrique Reyes can get her and they never find her again. And then what will happen to Robert Comer if all hell breaks loose and somehow his cover gets blown?

Brad’s cell phone rings and he picks up.

BRAD FOLLMER
Yes?

DANA SCULLY (FILERED)
It’s Scully. I checked out the
location comparison and I think it’s
safe to say that they are a match.

BRAD FOLLMER
Good. Call Skinner and tell them
to move in on that location. And
be sure to remind him of the UC agent.

DANA SCULLY
Yes, sir.

Brad hangs up. There is a little relief now that he knows the location could be the same. But there’s no way to tell right now until they get there and check it out. But Brad still needs this guy alive incase something goes wrong in New Mexico again.

CUT TO:

INT. NEW YORK FBI FIELD OFFICE – 7:00AM

Mulder, Krycek, and Antonio Reyes walk into a room with a video camera and television set up.

FOX MULDER
I’ll call and let everyone know
that we’re here so we can start.
(beat) I guess we’ll sit at this table.

ANTONIO REYES
All right.

FOX MULDER
(to Krycek)
Un-cuff him and I’ll make the calls.

Krycek decides that it is best not to argue this time and he un-cuffs Antonio as Mulder dials his phone.

ANTONIO REYES
Thank you.

ALEX KRYCEK
Yeah, whatever. (beat)
Sit down in that chair.

Antonio glares at Krycek and sits down.

ANTONIO REYES
You look at me as if I’m the bad
person here, Krycek.

ALEX KRYCEK
You’re the one wearing the cuffs.

ANTONIO REYES
At least I’m doing time for
my crimes. The same cannot
be said about you.

ALEX KRYCEK
Hey buddy, I’m FBI here. I’m
good. What do you know about it anyway?

ANTONIO REYES
You honestly think I don’t
talk to my sister, Monica,
do you? (beat) Or Brad, or
my brothers...

Krycek ignores him. He’d rather not talk about that. Mulder comes over to them and turns on the TV.

FOX MULDER
All right we’re ready to begin.
(beat) We’ll be talking to Deputy
Director Kersh instead of Brad.

ALEX KRYCEK
Why?

FOX MULDER
Because Brad’s waiting to question
a very important person about this
case who is in critical condition.

ALEX KRYCEK
Oh.

Kersh and Skinner’s faces come up on the television screen in a split screen fashion.

FOX MULDER
Good morning, gentlemen. (beat) Let’s not
waste any time and jump right into this.

WALTER SKINNER
Sounds good to me. (beat) I got a call
from Agent Scully telling me to give the
go ahead and have my men go out to the
location your man in custody gave. She
said it was a close match to
where the trace lead them.

ANTONIO REYES
What’s the nearest town to that location?

WALTER SKINNER
It’s empty space.

Antonio lets out an irritated sigh, there’s always a town near any location.

ANTONIO REYES
(down to business)
Is it close to Roswell, Santa Fe? What?

WALTER SKINNER
Roswell.

ANTONIO REYES
Enrique killed Monica and Carlos’s
parents not too far from there in
the small town of Corona. (beat) Chances
are, if Enrique has had contact with
Gonzalez, he’s dead and Enrique has them.

ALVIN KERSH
How can you be so sure?

Antonio looks over at Kersh.

ANTONIO REYES
Because Enrique has been locked up
in solitary confinement since 1971
plotting his revenge on my family,
but more importantly, how he can
get his “tokens” back from his Corona
massacre. (beat) I’d definitely check
out that location and be armed heavily.
And if he’s not there, go to Corona.

WALTER SKINNER
Do you know the exact location of
where you think he would be going
in Corona?

ANTONIO REYES
No I do not, sir. (beat) I don’t
know the exact location. But if
you go there and ask someone about
that massacre, I’m sure someone is
bound to know. (beat) Enrique left
one person living so he could tell
the story of what happened. (beat)
Ask him about the sheriff that died.

WALTER SKINNER
How will I know this man?

ANTONIO REYES
He does not have a right arm,
and he has a long scar from his
left eye down his body from
Enrique’s knife. (beat) You can’t miss him.

Skinner writes all of this down.

ALVIN KERSH
What about Carlos?

ANTONIO REYES
What about him?

ALVIN KERSH
He’s a criminal and on our
most wanted list.

ANTONIO REYES
And he’s also a victim in
this too, sir. I know that’s
probably hard for you to believe,
but Carlos can not defend himself
against Enrique. He’s in danger
too. (beat) For my family, and for
Monica, I suggest that you do not
forget about him, as much as he deserves
to die for the crimes he has committed,
he is my brother.

The conversation is interrupted by Kersh’s phone ringing.

ALVIN KERSH
One moment, please.

Kersh answers his phone.

ALVIN KERSH
(after a long beat)
Thank you.

Kersh hangs up his phone.

ALVIN KERSH
John Doe, the man we have
in custody, has just died.
(beat) A.D. Skinner, everything
depends on you and your men.

WALTER SKINNER
Yes, sir. (beat) John Doggett has
just stepped through my door.

ALVIN KERSH
Then go and get him up to speed.

WALTER SKINNER
Yes, sir.

Skinner’s screen goes black, and Kersh takes up the entire screen now.

ALVIN KERSH
Mr. Reyes, thank you for your help.
(beat) Mulder, Krycek. Stay in New
York with him incase we need him
anymore. (beat) I’ll keep you informed
of any developments.

FOX MULDER
Yes, sir.

Kersh’s screen goes black, leaving Krycek and Mulder alone with Antonio until further notice.

Mulder’s phone rings and he answers.

FOX MULDER
Mulder.

BRAD FOLLMER (FILTERED)
Agent Mulder, this is A.D. Follmer.
(beat) I haven’t told this to anyone
yet, but I’m removing myself from the
case. (beat) I’m putting you in charge.

Mulder freezes. Brad is putting him in charge? He takes a deep breath to give himself strength.

FOX MULDER
Yes, sir. (beat) May I ask why-

BRAD FOLLMER
-It’s becoming too personal for me,
and I want someone who can think clearly.
(beat) John Doe just died as well.

FOX MULDER
Yes, I just found that out, sir.
We just wrapped out our video
conference with Antonio Reyes.

BRAD FOLLMER
Then you already know more
than I do. (beat) I will
inform Kersh that I have put
you in charge.

FOX MULDER
Yes, sir.

Mulder hangs up the phone and looks up at Krycek.

FOX MULDER
That was A.D. Follmer. He’s just
put me in charge of the case.

ALEX KRYCEK
You? Why?

FOX MULDER
He has his reasons.

Mulder takes another deep breath. He doesn’t want to let Brad down, and he won’t. He doesn’t want to loose another friend in his life, especially since she just came back into everyone’s lives.

CUT TO:

INT. FBI FIELD OFFICE – ALBUQUERQUE, NM – 5:05AM

Doggett takes a seat in front of Skinner.

JOHN DOGGETT
You brought in Antonio Reyes, sir?

WALTER SKINNER
A lot has happened since you
left to come here, Agent Doggett.

JOHN DOGGETT
I’m listening.

WALTER SKINNER
Enrique Reyes was broken out of
prison and is helping Chino Gonzalez.

JOHN DOGGETT
Enrique Reyes, the man I’ve never
met but heard only horror stories about?

WALTER SKINNER
Yes. (beat) Also, Brad Follmer was
attacked in his apartment by a man
sent by Chino to kill him. Luckily,
Brad contained him and brought him
in for questioning. He’s led us to
a location where we can find Chino,
but we believe Chino is on to them,
and that the man we had in custody
has just died in the ER. (beat) Without
that man, we’re in the dark on this.

Doggett processes all of this.

JOHN DOGGETT
And what are we doing now?

WALTER SKINNER
I have a team going out to the
location given to us.

JOHN DOGGETT
How can you be sure it’s not a trap?

WALTER SKINNER
We’re not, but it’s all we have
to run on. (beat) There’s also
an undercover agent involved that
we didn’t know about at the beginning.
(beat) We’ve got his record and a photo
so everyone knows not to shoot him.

Skinner hands Doggett Comer’s file. He opens it and looks through, remembering his face so he won’t forget.

CUT TO:

INT. CHINO’S WAREHOUSE – 5:20AM

SWAT agents surround the warehouse as some more enter the warehouse.

The building is quiet. Too quiet. The morning light shines in through dusty windows, giving enough light to see.

The SWAT team does a protective sweep through the building and they find no one.

One of the SWAT agents removes his helmet.

SWAT AGENT #1
No one’s here.

SWAT AGENT #2
Wrong location?

SWAT AGENT #1
Maybe. I’ll call it in to Skinner.

The SWAT agent pulls out a satellite telephone and dials Skinner’s number.

WALTER SKINNER (FILTERED)
This is Skinner.

SWAT AGENT
Sir this is Agent O’Brien.
He gave the wrong location.
No one is-

A low moan of pain is heard under some wooden crates.

SWAT AGENT #1
One moment, sir. I think I
hear someone.

The SWAT Agent #1 signals to his team to check out the noise while he stays on the line with Skinner. They team goes over and lifts the crates to discover Robert Comer.

ROBERT COMER
(weak; quick to identify himself)
Special Agent Robert Comer,
I’m undercover.

SWAT AGENT #1
Sir, we have Comer.

WALTER SKINNER
He’s alone?

SWAT AGENT #1
(to Comer)
Are you alone?

ROBERT COMER
Yeah.

He tries to sit up on his own, but he grabs his side in pain and the other SWAT agents help him to his feet.

ROBERT COMER
Gonzalez is dead. Enrique Reyes took Carlos
and Monica Reyes. And everyone else beat the
shit out of me because they found out I was
undercover, then they high tailed it out of here.

SWAT AGENT #1
Where’s Gonzalez’s body?

ROBERT COMER
Under the floor boards. (beat)
Listen, I wouldn’t worry about
the others, but we have to find
Enrique. He’s going to kill them.

SWAT AGENT #1
All right. (to Skinner) Sir, we
need to find out where to find Enrique
Reyes. Comer says Gonzalez is dead.

WALTER SKINNER
All right. You guys come back
and I’ll send out another team
to find Enrique Reyes.

ROBERT COMER
(to SWAT Agent #1)
Tell him I want on that team.

SWAT AGENT #1
Sir, Agent Comer is requesting to
be on the team to take down Reyes.

WALTER SKINNER
No. Bring him in.

SWAT AGENT #1
All right. (beat) We’re coming back.

The SWAT agent hangs up the phone.

SWAT AGENT #1
Lets get you out of here. You
need medical attention, agent.

Comer holds his side, he can’t deny that. He’s hurt badly. On the bright side, he’s alive and now that this case is coming to a close, he can head back home soon and will be granted leave to heal physically.

CUT TO:

INT. FBI HEADQUARTERS – WASHINGTON, D.C. – 7:45AM EST

The elevator dings open and Brad Follmer exits the elevator. He’s looks stunned as he passes Scully in the hallway.

DANA SCULLY
Brad?

Brad turns around to face her, and she can tell that he’s affected by something.

DANA SCULLY
Are you all right?

BRAD FOLLMER
Our source died, and I got
a call from Kersh saying that
they only found the UC agent at
the location given to us.

Scully knows this is bad news.

BRAD FOLLMER
Also, Enrique took Monica and Carlos.
(beat) He wants to relive Corona again.

DANA SCULLY
Corona?

Brad realizes that Scully doesn’t know about Corona.

BRAD FOLLMER
Enrique Reyes killed Mon’ and Carlos’s biological
parents there, and he took them as tokens.
Until Enrique’s father, now Monica’s father,
took him back to the authorities and
adopted Monica and Carlos to watch over them.

DANA SCULLY
(shocked)
Oh my god.

BRAD FOLLMER
I’ve also removed myself from the case.
I’m here to tell Kersh that.

This catches Scully off guard, she thought he’d be determined enough to fight it through, but he is human after all.

DANA SCULLY
Do you know who they’ll put in charge?

BRAD FOLLMER
I’ve put Mulder in my place. Right
now he’s the only one who can head this.

Scully nods her head.

BRAD FOLLMER
If you’ll excuse me...

DANA SCULLY
Yeah...

Brad turns and walks away. Scully watches him, hoping that they can find Monica because it doesn’t seem like Brad is handling this situation as good as he should. And to think, this was Monica’s first case back to the FBI...

CUT TO:

INT. ALVIN KERSH’S OFFICE

Brad quietly knocks on the door and then enters the office. Kersh is on the phone and looks up at him, and hold up a finger indicating that he’ll be with him in one moment. Brad stands patiently in front of him until he’s done with his phone call.

ALVIN KERSH
Let me know how that goes
the moment it happens.

Kersh hangs up the phone and looks at Brad.

ALVIN KERSH
That was Skinner. He and Agent Doggett
are heading the team going out to Corona
to bring down Enrique Reyes.

BRAD FOLLMER
(nodding head)
That’s good. (beat) Sir, I’d like
to be removed from this case.

Kersh looks up at him. This was the last thing he ever expected to come out of Brad’s mouth today. However, he understands where he’s coming from. Personal cases are treacherous.

ALVIN KERSH
That’s fine Brad. I think that
was a good decision you made.

BRAD FOLLMER
I’ve also found a replacement to
head the case. (beat) Fox Mulder.

Kersh freezes. Did he really just hear that come out of Brad Follmer?

ALVIN KERSH
I’m sorry, did you say Fox Mulder?

BRAD FOLLMER
Yes, sir. I believe he is the
best qualified agent to head
this case in my absence. (beat)
He has strong leadership skills
and knows how to get the job done.
(beat) Right now, I wouldn’t put anyone
else ahead of him on this case, sir.

Kersh looks at him like he’s gone mental.

ALVIN KERSH
We’re talking about Fox Mulder here, Brad.

BRAD FOLLMER
Yes, sir. I know. (beat) So how
about you stop wasting time and
accept that I’ve already briefed
him on what to do as the leader
of this task force and move in
a forward direction. (beat) I
don’t think we need to be wasting
valuable time on this, sir.

ALVIN KERSH
I don’t know about this, Brad. I
really don’t. (beat) But if you
are putting him in your place while
you’re relieved of the case, it must
be for a good reason that I haven’t seen.
(beat) You’re free to go home. I’ll keep
you updated about Monica the moment I
find any information out.

BRAD FOLLMER
Thank you, sir.

Brad turns and leaves Kersh’s office, leaving Kersh wondering why Brad put Fox Mulder in his place.

CUT TO:

INT. HELICOPTER – NEW MEXICO AIR SPACE – 6:09AM

Doggett and Skinner sit patiently waiting to arrive in Corona. Doggett keeps his eyes open to the ground far below. Despite how terrified of heights he is, helicopters never bothered him, and especially not today. The last thing he wants is to become frozen by his fear of heights.

JOHN DOGGETT
(to pilot; yelling over loudness)
How much longer ‘till we get there?!

PILOT
Just a few more minutes, sir!
That’s it way off over there!

The pilot points out the front window. Doggett looks, wishing he were there now. He leans back in his chair and looks down again. Skinner watches him, making sure his fear of heights won’t get the best of him.

WALTER SKINNER
(to Doggett)
The thing about Corona is that
everyone is so spread out! It’ll
be difficult to sweep the area quickly!

Doggett nods his head. He knows, and he doesn’t like that, but what can they do? Enrique took them there knowing it was going to be difficult to find.

JOHN DOGGETT
Let’s hope we can find that one
deputy who lived through Enrique’s
massacre back in ’71! He’ll hopefully
be able to tell us where Mon’s parents lived!

WALTER SKINNER
I hope so!

CUT TO:

EXT. OLD DE VELÁZQUEZ HOME – CORONA, NM

Enrique’s car come roaring down the old dirt road, much in the same fashion that he did back in 1971. A long cloud of dust follows behind. Enrique drives as fast as the flames of Hell to the last place he remembers when he was a free man. Monica and Carlos are in the back seat.

Carlos watches Enrique with hawk eyes. Any twitch Enrique does gets noticed by Carlos. He’s not about to let this man kill his sister.

Enrique stops the car in front of the old white house. The once beautifully painted house is now worn by weather and paint is pealing off. The old white picket fence is breaking from age. But the small mail box with “Velázquez” fading away on it still stands.

Enrique gets out and opens the back door and pulls Monica out. He looks in at Carlos.

ENRIQUE REYES
Get out.

Carlos glares at him and does as he asks.

ENRIQUE REYES
I am not going to hurt you. (beat)
I simply want to give you a tour
of your past. (beat) Especially
you, Monica Isabella de Velázquez.

Monica looks up at him. She’s never heard that name before in her life. She has no idea what he’s talking about, or what he wants with her and Carlos. Despite her psychic ability, Monica has blocked the horrible slaying of her birth parents and because of that, she cannot retrieve the information through any psychic means for her own good. The mind blocks what the body cannot handle.

Enrique guides Monica to the house, passing the unmarked grave of Carolina de Velázquez, Monica’s birth mother, who’s body was never found. Monica senses something she does not know, and looks down at the unmarked grave where her mother was buried alive and suffocated to death.

Enrique continues on without stopping and opens the door to the tiny white house. They both stand in the doorway.

ENRIQUE REYES
Do you remember, Monica?

MONICA REYES
(scared)
I don’t know what you want me to remember.

CARLOS REYES
She doesn’t remember, so leave her alone.

Enrique glares back at Carlos. His glare is Carlos’s only warning to keep his mouth shut. Enrique is going to make Monica remember what happened here and there is nothing Carlos can do to stop him. As Enrique said to the deputy who’s life he spared back in 1971: He is unstoppable.

Enrique turns his back on Carlos, leaving Carlos outside.

ENRIQUE REYES
Think back, long ago in your life...
before you were taken by the Reyes
family... what do you remember?

He lets go of her arm to allow her the freedom to remember without any fear of him.

ENRIQUE REYES
Go ahead, Monica. Take a look around.
(beat) You sense that there is something here.

Carlos stands outside the house, watching Enrique and Monica. For once in his life he is at a loss as to what to do. He’s never even anticipated seeing Enrique in his life, and never expected to be here again either. He looks down at the ground where his mother died. Memories flood his mind of her, but he cannot recall all... the most dominating memory is that of Enrique killing his parents. He looks back inside the house, where Enrique has allowed Monica to wander freely.

Monica walks to the center of the room, standing underneath the attic doorway where Carolina had hidden with Carlos and Monica when Enrique first entered the house. She looks back at Enrique standing in the doorway.

FLASH: Monica’s mind’s eye sees Enrique strike her father, Alejandro, down to the ground with so much force that it knocks him out.

Monica freezes, remembering the first of many memories in this house.

MONICA REYES
You killed a man, here.

Enrique smiles, glad that something has come back to her, and especially glad that it was something he did and not a memory of better times.

Monica looks away from him and over to the wall in front of her, where her father was tied up in front of. Another memory flash hits her of Enrique stabbing her father.

MONICA REYES
You took what you wanted of his
life because you are a “foolish coward”.

Monica turns to face him, remembering, knowing what he did. Her father’s words come to her mind. Enrique is a “foolish coward” and maybe it is her destiny to be here... she’s not sure. She doesn’t even know who the man was.

MONICA REYES
You were the coward, Enrique. That’s
why you killed that man.

Enrique walks up to her, pulling out his knife. The same knife with the jagged edge he used to slaughter the entire town of Corona and to kill her parents.

ENRIQUE REYES
No. I was no coward. I didn’t just
kill that man. I killed an entire
town. (beat) Do you know who that
man was, Monica?

She shakes her head “no”.

ENRIQUE REYES
He was your father. His name was
Alejandro de Velázquez.

Monica looks at him for a moment, and then back over to the wall where her father died.

ENRIQUE REYES
He was a police officer. (beat)
Law enforcement. (beat) Just like you.

Monica looks around the house. Her eyes take everything in. Even though the house is empty, she senses what used to be there. A smile crosses her face as a memory of her mother, Carolina, comes to her mind. Monica can even see her mother in the house. Not as a spirit, or a ghost, but as a memory in Monica’s mind.

MONICA REYES
We were happy here. (beat) My mother
was a school teacher.

Monica smiles, remembering how her mother taught her things when she was very young.

MONICA REYES
We were so happy here. I can feel
it. (beat) But you took all of that away.

She turns to look at Enrique.

MONICA REYES
Why did you bring me here?

ENRIQUE REYES
I think you already know. I
see it in your eyes, Monica.

MONICA REYES
So you can kill me like you
killed my father?

Suddenly, a memory flash of Enrique raping her mother enters her mind. She shuts her eyes, hoping that can block it, but she can’t. She sees everything that Enrique did to her mother. Everything he did to her father. Tears fall from her eyes.

MONICA REYES
How could you do this? (beat)
Why are you doing this? Why
bring Carlos and I here? (beat)
So you can do the same to me? So
you can rape me like you raped
my mother? (beat) Will you bury
me alive under the ground to die
next to her? Or will you gut me like
you did to my father?

Enrique smiles. He enjoys that she is trying hiding her fear from him.

ENRIQUE REYES
You ask the questions because you
are afraid, Monica Isabella. (beat)
You ask the questions because you
already know the answers.

MONICA REYES
How do you know that?

Enrique takes a step towards her.

ENRIQUE REYES
I know because you are similar
to your mother. (beat) You look
just like her. So beautiful, and
wise... (beat) You are also like
your father. You want to uphold
the law, do what is right. (beat)
You see don’t you? You see what I
will do to you, don’t you?

MONICA REYES
Why are you doing this?

Enrique takes another step closer to her. She doesn’t move.

ENRIQUE REYES
You already know. (beat) I want to
finish what I’ve started. (beat) When
my father took you away from me, that
left my revenge unfulfilled. (beat) You
will die here today, Monica Isabella de Velázquez.

Monica takes a step closer to him and looks up into his eyes.

MONICA REYES
No I won’t. Because I am just like my mother.
(beat) And that includes her strong ability.

Monica smiles at him with a sly grin.

MONICA REYES
I know how this day will end.

ENRIQUE REYES
And how do you know that?

MONICA REYES
Because, Enrique... I know when to duck.

He looks down at her confused, having no idea what she’s talking about.

ENRIQUE REYES
What?

Monica quickly ducks, just as John Doggett fires his gun from the doorway and bullets fly through Enrique, dropping him to the ground.

JOHN DOGGETT
MONICA! YOU OK?!

Monica lies on the ground, shaking from fear and shock, she had no idea John Doggett was behind Enrique in the doorway. She couldn’t see him, she just went with her gut feeling.

She looks at Enrique, his eyes lock on her as his breathing slows.

JOHN DOGGETT
MONICA?!

MONICA REYES
(shaky)
I’m fine, John.

Tears fill her eyes as Doggett comes into the house, followed by Skinner and his team. Doggett comes up to her.

JOHN DOGGETT
Monica?

MONICA REYES
I’m okay.

He helps her to her feet.

JOHN DOGGETT
Let’s get you out of here.

He starts to lead her out of the house, but she stops at the doorway.

JOHN DOGGETT
What is it?

MONICA REYES
I need a moment, John.

John nods his head and goes over to where they are holding Carlos.

Monica turns around and watches as Skinner and his team handcuff Enrique Reyes.

MONICA REYES
He’s not dead.

Skinner comes over to her and moves her out of the way as they bring Enrique out of the house.

WALTER SKINNER
Not yet... give it time.

MONICA REYES
(tears in her eyes)
That man deserves to die.

Skinner looks her over.

WALTER SKINNER
(caring)
I know. (beat) It’s over. Okay?

He puts his hand on her shoulder and then walks away. For him this is all over, but not for Monica. Everything she blocked about her parents death has come back at her full force and she can’t stop it. Everything of her past that she blocked is rising to the surface, whether she’s ready for it or not. Her mind cannot block it any more, and she’s not ready for it. Her body still shakes in fear, her muscles tensing continuously, and her lower lip quivers. She bites her lower lip trying to gain control of herself.

MONICA REYES
Sir, could I speak with Carlos
before you take him away too?

WALTER SKINNER
He’s already in our-

MONICA REYES
-Please, sir.

Skinner looks at her for a moment, then nods his head. They’ve got the place surrounded and if he tries to run they can get him.

MONICA REYES
Thank you.

Monica walks away from the house and over to where her mother was buried. She sits down and looks at the ground.

Doggett brings Carlos over to Monica.

CARLOS REYES
Monica?

Monica doesn’t look up at him, but signals with her hand to have him sit down next to her. Carlos looks at Doggett and without words, Doggett knows that they need to have a talk alone. Without a word, Doggett un-cuffs Carlos. He nods his head and walks a few feet away.

Carlos sits down next to Monica.

CARLOS REYES
You okay?

Monica doesn’t say anything, she can’t. She just shakes her head as tears fall from her eyes. She leans onto Carlos’s shoulder and cries. He wraps his arm around her for support.

CARLOS REYES
I’m sorry Monica.

MONICA REYES
For what?

CARLOS REYES
For everything. (beat) I only-

MONICA REYES
I know, Carlos. I know. You
were looking out for me. (beat)
I don’t want you to turn into Enrique.

CARLOS REYES
I’m not gonna turn into Enrique, Monica.

MONICA REYES
The things you do, Carlos... it’s
not right to hurt people. To take
away another person’s family. It’s
not right, Carlos...

CARLOS REYES
I know. (beat) That’s why I’m going
without a problem. (beat) I don’t want
to continue what I do either. (beat)
I’m finished now, okay?

Monica looks up at Carlos and hugs him.

MONICA REYES
I remember things, Carlos. (beat) Not
just what happened here to our parents.
(beat) I remember what life was like
before all of that.

A smiles forms on her face as tears continue to fall.

MONICA REYES
You loved toy trucks.

Carlos remembers and smiles.

CARLOS REYES
Yeah, I did. (beat) I also liked
to eat honey...

MONICA REYES
Yeah... and put it in my hair.

Monica laughs, remembering a time from before she became a Reyes.

They sit in silence for a beat.

MONICA REYES
Do you feel them, Carlos?

Carlos looks down at her.

CARLOS REYES
What do you mean?

MONICA REYES
I feel them. They’re here with us now.

She smiles at him.

CARLOS REYES
Who?

MONICA REYES
Mom and Dad. (beat) I feel Mom more.
She’s helping me, Carlos. I feel her.
(beat) We’re sitting in front of her grave.

CARLOS REYES
I know.

MONICA REYES
They say it’s time to go.

Carlos looks back at Doggett, who is just waiting patiently.

CARLOS REYES
It doesn’t look like they’re in
a hurry to get me to prison...

MONICA REYES
Not you, Carlos. They can move
on now. (beat) They haven’t been
at rest for all of these years.

CARLOS REYES
Mom and Dad?

MONICA REYES
Yes... they’re free. They
can finally rest.

Monica looks at Carlos and smiles.

MONICA REYES
You better go now, Carlos. They’re
getting nervous back there.

She smiles and laughs at how nervous Skinner is.

CARLOS REYES
Should I make them really nervous and run?

MONICA REYES
No.

CARLOS REYES
You gonna be okay?

MONICA REYES
I’ll be all right.

Carlos nods his head and stands up. He goes over to Doggett, leaving Monica alone at their mother’s grave. Doggett handcuffs Carlos and leads him over to the car so they can take him in.

A few moments later, John comes up to Monica.

JOHN DOGGETT
You coming, Monica?

MONICA REYES
Yeah...

She takes a deep breath before she stands up and pats the dust off of her.

JOHN DOGGETT
He didn’t hurt you?

MONICA REYES
No. But if you didn’t show
up I’d be at rest next to
my mother.

Monica looks down at the ground.

MONICA REYES
He was going to kill me, John.

JOHN DOGGETT
I know.

MONICA REYES
Not like how I know. (beat)
I saw what he was going to
do to me...

Doggett looks down, he doesn’t know what to say to that.

MONICA REYES
You don’t have to say anything
to that, John. (beat) I’m just
thankful that you are here.

Monica smiles at him and walks passed him towards another car.

Doggett turns to watch her walk away.

JOHN DOGGETT
You want to head back to D.C.?

Monica stops walking and turns to face him.

MONICA REYES
Not yet. I want to stop by and
see Agent Comer and thank him
for what he did today.

Doggett nods his head and walks up to her.

JOHN DOGGETT
I didn’t know you knew him.

MONICA REYES
He was my partner in New Orleans.

JOHN DOGGETT
(surprised)
Really? (beat) Why is it that
you never talk about New Orleans
with anyone?

MONICA REYES
Because.

She smiles at him. Doggett stops walking and Monica continues.

JOHN DOGGETT
What, is this some weird Reyes
thing where you have to have a
mysterious time in your life that
no one knows about?

MONICA REYES
Maybe.

JOHN DOGGETT
Someone should really warn
Brad about you...

Monica laughs.

MONICA REYES
Someone should’ve warned me that
my first day back to work would
be like this.

JOHN DOGGETT
You mean your psychic senses
and other mumbo-jumbo didn’t
tell you to stay home?

Monica opens the passenger side door of the car. Doggett walks again and opens the driver’s side and gets in, as does Monica.

MONICA REYES
Very funny, John. I’m trying to
control that ability. (beat) Besides,
why would I pass up a day where Mulder
is the new boss and we have to report to him.

JOHN DOGGETT
What?

MONICA REYES
You didn’t hear?

JOHN DOGGETT
No.

MONICA REYES
Brad removed himself from the case
when it became too personal for him
so he put Mulder in charge.

JOHN DOGGETT
You’re pulling my leg.

MONICA REYES
No I’m not. Call Dana. She’ll confirm.

JOHN DOGGETT
I will not call.

MONICA REYES
Because you know I’m right.

JOHN DOGGETT
You are not.

MONICA REYES
Keep telling yourself that. (beat)
Where’s your phone I need to call
Brad. He’s worried sick about me.

Doggett hands her his cell phone.

JOHN DOGGETT
You sure you’re okay, Monica?

He watches her closely. He saw how shaken up she was after he came through the door.

MONICA REYES
I will be, John. (beat) Enrique
won’t make it alive to the hospital.
(beat) Carlos is going quietly, and...
(beat) Now I know about my parents, John.
I’ve always wondered about them. Why didn’t
they want me in their lives, or was I
a problem for them? All my unanswered questions
have been answered. (beat) I just need to
deal with what I know now. (beat) Maybe this
is just the beginning of the end...

She looks away from John, leaving him to wonder what she means by that, as she dials Brad’s number. Off of John’s look, we...

FADE OUT:

THE END.
