Cerasi J's Review:
“Oh, get that expression off your face.”
In this hilarious episode written by Cassie, an old story and a simple phone call get the ball rolling. Scully is mad about being Skinner’s secretary and somehow winds going on a date with a charming Assistant Director, Doggett and Monica are jealous and wind up spying on said date. And all hell breaks loose when Monica’s cell phone rings. “Picking Up the Tab” is an absolutely charming and heart-warming addition to Season Five. =)

FADE IN:

INT. FBI – MULDER/SCULLY/KRYCEK OFFICE – DAY – 4PM
OCTOBER 17

Monica and Doggett are supposed to be discussing a case with Scully and Mulder. However, Mulder has taken this opportunity to inform the agents about his sister Samantha. Mulder is pacing around the room while talking. Scully is sitting on Mulder’s desk, looking at her feet, not in the best of moods. Doggett sits behind her in Mulder’s chair, listening to what Mulder has to say. Monica sits in a chair in front of the desk.

MULDER
…I was petrified, the walls were
shaking. I didn’t know what else
to do except get my father’s gun…

As he is telling this story, Scully mouths it off with him. She’s heard this several times.

MULDER (CON’T)
…and when I did, I looked back, out
into the living room, and saw her…
floating out of the open window. (beat)
(holds back tears) That’s my last memory of my sister.

Mulder stops pacing, he’s behind Monica. He places his hand on her shoulders for support and looks over at Doggett with sad puppy dog eyes.

MULDER
(deadpan)
The aliens abducted my sister.

The room is quiet. Doggett doesn’t believe, of course, and Monica looks sad and touched by Mulder’s show of emotion. Scully has heard this a thousand times, she has no reaction. She’s lost in her own thoughts.

After a few more quiet beats, the office phone rings. Doggett answers.

DOGGETT
Agent Doggett. (beat) Yeah, she’s here.

He holds the phone out to Scully.

DOGGETT
It’s for you Agent Scully.

Scully is surprised, she takes the phone.

SCULLY
This is Agent Scully.

She listens as the person on the other end speaks then hangs up. She doesn’t look happy, she stands up.

SCULLY
(mad)
I am so sick of this.

She storms out of the office without an explanation.

MULDER
I don’t know why, but she always
gets like this when I tell about Samantha.

Doggett and Monica share a look, they can only guess that Scully has heard that story quite a bit, and they understand how one could get instantly annoyed.

CUT TO:

INT. SKINNER’S OFFICE

Skinner is on the phone with someone important, a file is in front of him addressed to Assistant Director Brad Follmer.

Suddenly, Scully bursts through the door, angry. We see Skinner’s secretary, Kim, behind her, trying to hold her back.

SCULLY
Mr. Skinner, I am sick of being
treated as your god damned
secretary. I am an agent of
the FBI in an investigative division-

Skinner glares at her.

SKINNER
(on phone)
Will you excuse me for a moment.

Skinner puts the caller on hold and stands up. The Follmer file in his hand. He walks up to Scully so she has to strain her neck to look into his face.

SKINNER
I need you to take this up to A.D. Follmer.

He hands her the file.

SCULLY
(disbelief)
Excuse me?

SKINNER
Take this up to A.D. Follmer.

Scully viscously grabs the file, glaring at him.

SCULLY
Oh I heard you!

Scully turns and opens the door, takes a beat turns to face Skinner.

SCULLY
I don’t appreciate being treated
like this. You have a personal
secretary to do errands for you.
Yet you drag me from the basement
to take this to the (looks at file) sixth floor.

SKINNER
Just thought you need a little
exercise. (beat) I can see you’ve
gained some weight in the last month.

Scully is shocked that Skinner said that to her, even though it’s a little true. She has no comeback. So she storms out to deliver his damn file.

CUT TO:

INT. MULDER/SCULLY/KRYCEK OFFICE

Monica, Doggett, and Mulder have finally started to look at their new case. Krycek has now decided to join them, he’s eating a turkey sandwich. Mulder has just stopped mid-sentence, his mind has wandered… Doggett looks on expectantly.

DOGGETT
What about the cat’s telekinetic powers?

Mulder doesn’t answer his question, instead:

MULDER
I really miss Samantha.

Krycek rolls his eyes, rips off a bit of his sandwich and throws it at Mulder.

CUT TO:

INT. A.D. FOLLMER’S WAITING ROOM OUTSIDE OF HIS OFFICE

Scully has just entered the waiting area outside of the office. Scully quietly knocks on the door and enters.

SCULLY
Excuse me, Assistant Director Follmer?

Brad Follmer turns around and flashes her a daring hansom smile.

SCULLY
A.D. Skinner called me out of the basement-

Before she knows what has happened, Brad Follmer has locked lips with her. She doesn’t know what to do, so she stands there and lets it happen. After a few seconds, Brad pulls away.

SCULLY
(pleasantly surprised… maybe)
Ok…

Scully seems embarrassed. She runs her hand through her hair, she can’t make eye-contact with Brad.

FOLLMER
I’m sorry, I was just taken
by your beauty. (beat) I
didn’t catch your name?

Scully looks up at him, still confused about what just happened.

SCULLY
Agent Scully. Dana Scully.

She holds her hand out to shake his hand. He takes her hand in his and looks into her eyes.

FOLLMER
Pleasure to meet you, Dana.

He brings her hand to his lips and kisses it. Scully blushes.

SCULLY
Nice to meet you too, I think.

She takes her hand out of his and heads, and hands him the file Skinner told her to give to him. She then heads towards the door and then before leaving turns around to ask him something.

SCULLY/FOLLMER
Are you doing anything tonight?

They both laugh a little, breaking some of the odd tension Brad started.

FOLLMER
Guess that means we’ll be
having dinner at Bella Flora’s
tonight. I’ll pick you up, let’s
say seven o’clock?

SCULLY
That’d be perfect.

She re-enters the office to give Brad her address and phone number.

CUT TO:

INT. MULDER/SCULLY/KRYCEK OFFICE

Doggett is reviewing the new case, Monica is comforting Mulder, and Krycek is coloring on newspaper pictures that are tacked up on the wall behind the desk. They suddenly hear the sounds of happy feet approaching the office.

KRYCEK
(surprised)
What is Marita doing here?

Scully walks through the door, all happy and smiling. The group looks at her oddly. What a change in mood. Krycek is disappointed that it’s not Marita.

MULDER
Skinner finally be nice to you?

SCULLY
You guys will never guess what just happened.

KRYCEK
Kersh took you out of the x-files
Division and you’re on your
way to becoming the Director?

SCULLY
Nope! I have a date tonight!

Doggett holds back any truthful reaction to this and gives her a blank expression.

DOGGETT
(slightly jealous)
Do we know the guy?

MONICA
It’s not Agent Alfredo, is it?

SCULLY
No, actually this has convinced me
I should stop trying to date my male friends.

MULDER
The man asked a question!
Do we know the guy?

Scully smiles.

SCULLY
Probably not. It’s Assistant
Director Brad Follmer.

Monica gasps and Doggett’s eyes go wide. Monica is not breathing, infact, she may have taken all the air out of the room.

MULDER
I don’t know him.

SCULLY
I know! I didn’t even know him.
And he’s taking me to Bella Flora’s.
(beat) He’s so dreamy…

Doggett can’t help himself. He slips:

DOGGETT
(disbelief)
Oh God!

Scully smiles at Doggett and grabs her coat.

SCULLY
Well I’m gonna go early.
Gotta find something slutty to wear.

They give her odd looks. Monica is hyperventilating.

SCULLY
(correcting herself)
Something nice to wear.
See you guys later.

KRYCEK
Have a wild night!

She leaves.

They are quiet until they hear the elevator go up.

Doggett turns quickly to Monica.

DOGGETT
Breathe Monica! Breathe!

Now it’s time for Mulder and Krycek to share a confused look. What’s wrong with Monica?

TIME CUT TO:

INT. SCULLY/MARITA/MONICA APARTMENT – 6:45PM

Marita is sitting on the couch talking on the phone with Skinner. The TV is muted. Scully steps out of her bedroom wearing a short, tight, revealing midnight red dress with matching high-heels. Around her neck is a pearl necklace. She poses for Marita and is given two thumbs up. Marita hangs up the phone.

MARITA
Dana, I’m jealous. You look so pretty.

Marita hugs Scully.

MARITA
Lord have mercy on this boy.

They both laugh.

SCULLY
You don’t think I look
too whorish, do you?

MARITA
Just enough Scully and just
enough to seem like you
aren’t expecting to get some.
(beat) So you really don’t know
anything about this guy?

Scully shakes her head while looking at herself in a mirror, adjusting herself to enhance her cleavage.

SCULLY
I really think it’s best I meet
new people. Getting involved
with friends doesn’t ever seem to work.

Marita gives her a skeptical look.

MARITA
What about John being your “destiny”?

Awkward beat.

SCULLY
Well, he hasn’t shown any sign
of wanting to be with me.

Marita rolls her eyes.

SCULLY
What?

There is a knock at the door. Scully runs to her room.

SCULLY
Answer that for me. I want to
make an entrance.

Marita opens the door and Brad Follmer is standing there with a single red rose in his hand. He smiles at Marita. She smiles back, she seems to know him.

FOLLMER
I’m here to pick up Dana.

Right on cue, Scully comes out from her room. Brad’s eyes are drawn like magnets to her. He walks right past Marita to Scully. He hands her the red rose.

FOLLMER
One red rose for one beautiful woman.

Scully brings the rose to her nose and smells it. All the while seductively locking eyes with Brad.

SCULLY
Only one rose?

FOLLMER
One of a dozen. Eventually
you’ll get them all.

Scully smiles and sways her hips as she enters the kitchen to put it in water. It’s surprising to us that Brad isn’t salivating over her yet. Scully comes back out.

SCULLY
So is that supposed to mean I’ve
got at lease eleven more dates with you?

FOLLMER
If all goes well from here on out…

Scully wraps her arm through his and they leave without saying goodbye to Marita. The door shuts.

MARITA
(to herself)
Well, I’ll definitely be staying
the night at Walter’s…

She sits down at the dining table to write a note for Monica, telling her to go elsewhere for the night since Scully will probably be bringing this guy back and they don’t want to listen to all that.

Marita smiles at her note, she’s such a good friend, warning Monica like this.

She grabs her keys and heads out the apartment.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. BELLA FLORA – 7:15PM

This is a very expensive Italian restaurant, formal dress and live classical music. Monica and Doggett are there, obviously to spy on Scully’s date.

MONICA
(disbelief)
Bradley, Johnny, Bradley!
Why didn’t you tell me Brad
was an A.D. at this office. You
know how he gets around. I may
have prevented him even ever
meeting Dana. And we wouldn’t
have to be going through this.

DOGGETT
Monica, I thought you got
over Mr. Follmer awhile ago.

Monica isn’t given a chance to respond to this, for at that very moment, Dana Scully and Brad Follmer have entered the restaurant. Monica sits there, looking behind Doggett at them with her mouth dropped open and not blinking her eyes.

Scully and Follmer don’t notice them. Doggett turns in his chair to see what Monica is looking at. He notices only Scully. He turns his attention back to Monica.

DOGGETT
Oh, get that expression off your face.

As a host of the restaurant leads Scully and Follmer to their table, they pass Doggett and Monica. Follmer glances at them and notices Monica, his eyes widen in shock. He had no clue Monica was in D.C. They are seated at a table behind Monica. Scully sits on the end where she can see Doggett, but that’s not where her attention is…

SCULLY
So how did you become an Assistant Director?

Brad’s mind isn’t exactly on his date with Scully now that he’s seen Monica.

FOLLMER
(not caring about conversation/lying)
Got the position right out of Quantico.

Brad glances over his shoulder to look at the back of Monica’s head.

Doggett is sipping his glass of water, carefully, but not too obviously watching Scully and Follmer.

MONICA
I can’t believe he’s doing this to
me. He must have known I moved
up here and decided to make his
presence known by asking one of
my friends out on a date. That’s so
typical of him. (beat) Has he seen me yet?

Doggett has noticed Follmer glancing back at her, but he’s hoping Monica will loose interest in the man that broke her heart one too many times in the past.

DOGGETT
Not once Mon’. (beat) Do you think Agent Scully-

MONICA
-Oh Johnny, stop calling her that.

DOGGETT
Do you think Dana was serious when
she said she wasn’t going to get involved
with friends? I mean, I’ve only known
her for a little over a year…

Monica doesn’t know, so instead of trying to BS an answer, she glances back at Brad, just as he glances back at her. Their eyes lock. Scully still hasn’t noticed Monica and Doggett. She’s wondering what is distracting Brad.

SCULLY
Brad? Is there something wrong?

She reaches across the table and touches Brad’s hand, he looks at her. Scully is trying to look into his eyes. He’s not really there anymore. A waiter approaches them:

WAITER
Are you ready to place your order?

Brad fakes an uncomfortable cough and orders what could only be an expensive meal. Scully does as well, knowing very well she won’t be paying. Little does she know how much it costs, excluding the wine.

We see the waiter re-fill Doggett’s water and bring him a rather small salad, and it doesn’t even look good. Monica sneers at it.

MONICA
I can’t believe you ordered a $30 salad, Johnny.

Doggett holds his fork, unsure of how to begin eating this. Monica has no meal in front of her. They hear one of Scully’s sexy flirtatious laughs. Doggett gets jealous, Monica gets furious.

CUT TO:

INT. SKINNER’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM

Marita and Skinner are comfortable on the couch watching a boxing match on Pay-Per-View. Skinner is lying down, resting his head on Marita’s lap.

MARITA
You seems tense, honey.

Skinner lets out a heavy sigh.

SKINNER
I’ve had a lot on my mind lately, that’s all.

Marita thinks for a moment.

MARITA
You’re not upset that Dana is on
a date tonight, are you? If you
are, you can tell me. I understand.

Skinner sits up.

SKINNER
She’s on a what?

MARITA
Yeah, with Brad Follmer.

SKINNER
That figures… the way he gets around.

He rests his head again, Marita doesn’t look happy.

MARITA
I hope you’re not saying
that Scully’s a sleaze.

SKINNER
That could be debated for years-

MARITA
-Hey! Remember, you were the one
having the affair, same could be said
about you mister.

SKINNER
Well, obviously you think she’s… ya know.
Comin’ here tonight ‘cause you don’t want
to hear her and Assistant Director Follmer-

MARITA
-Oh geez! That reminds me! I better
call Monica in case my post-it note
fell off our front door. We wouldn’t
want her walking in on Dana and Brad.

Marita picks up the phone and dials Monica’s cell.

MARITA
Lord knows, I was scarred enough
by Dana and you.

Off Skinner’s look:

CUT TO:

INT. BELLA FLORA’S – 8:30PM

Scully and Brad have finished their meal.

SCULLY
You know, Brad, I don’t usually
date men that work at the same
place I do-

Monica’s cell phone rings behind him. We see Monica answer and lave the table to go talk. Brad turns when he sees her stand up. He watches her go stand in a corner about thirty feet away. He turns back to Scully.

FOLLMER
Would you excuse me for a moment.

Brad leaves their table and goes off in Monica’s direction. Scully stares into the candle flame in the middle of the table and gets a feeling she’s being watched. She looks up and finally sees Doggett sitting at the table next to hers. He’s looking at her. He nods at her when he sees she’s looking at him. She gives him a warm smile. They continue to wait for their dates to return to them.

Twenty minutes pass, neither Monica nor Brad have returned. A waiter has just returned Doggett’s credit card. Doggett has figured out what has probably happened and wants to go back home and get into some comfortable clothes. He stands up to leave, giving one last glance at Scully.

Scully is resting her head in her hands and is starring at nothing. She doesn’t want to admit what she knows is true. Brad Follmer ditched her without paying for their meal and she has no money, and Doggett was there as a witness.

Doggett is about to leave, then turns around and heads toward Scully’s table. He has to let her know what happened and be there for her as a friend. Plus he can’t have another friend chasing after Bradley Follmer only to have her heart broken by his idiocy.

DOGGETT
Dana.

Scully looks up at him.

DOGGETT
Mind if I join you?

She nods at the other chair, he takes a seat.

DOGGETT
Hey look…

Doggett reaches out and holds her hand.

DOGGETT
Think of the bright side. You found out
early on what kind of guy Mr. Follmer is.

Scully looks up at him.

SCULLY
(upset)
An asshole. An asshole who didn’t pay
for dinner and left me here with no money
and no way home.

Doggett looks at their table and what remains of their dinner. He sees a bottle of wine that could only cost a couple hundred dollars, and their meals as well. Let’s just say his mind can’t even imagine how much all that cost if his small salad cost him $30.

He doesn’t say anything and signals the waiter.

WAITER
Yes, sir?

DOGGETT
I’ll pick up the tab on this one as well.

Doggett hands his credit card to the waiter. The waiter goes off to charge it.

SCULLY
John, you didn’t have to do that-

DOGGETT
It’s the best thing I can do for
a friend who’s had a rough day.

He smiles at her and the waiter brings back his card. Doggett looks at the receipt and sees that cost him nearly $500, he doesn’t say anything about it to Scully. He puts his credit card back in his wallet.

DOGGETT
Let’s go. I’ll take you home.

He stands up, as does Scully. He puts his arm around her shoulders and they leave.

CUT TO:

INT. SCULLY/MARITA/MONICA APARTMENT – 8:55PM

The apartment is empty with a single lamp on. Suddenly, the door files open and Brad (with Monica wrapping her legs around his waist) enter the apartment. The two of them struggle to close the door. When they succeed, they find their way to the couch in the living room, knocking over the lamp (breaking it). In the dark, they continue to find new and interesting ways of creating a double human pretzel.

CUT TO:

INT. DOGGETT’S TRUCK – 9 PM

DOGGETT
You see, ever since she and Brad
were together in high school she has
thought they were destined to be together.

SCULLY
All because she was a tom-boy
and he was the only man… boy
that made her feel beautiful?

Doggett nods his head.

SCULLY
I never would have thought Monica
to be like that. She seems so down to
earth. (beat) Well at least, I know to
ignore Mr. Follmer’s advances from
now on. Why didn’t you tell me all
this earlier today?

DOGGETT
You looked so happy. I didn’t
want to ruin your mood.

SCULLY
If so, why did you and Monica
show up tonight? If Mon’ hadn’t
been there, he wouldn’t have ditched me.

Doggett doesn’t answer, they pull up outside her apartment building.

DOGGETT
We’re here. (beat) Would you
Like me to walk you upstairs?

SCULLY
(opening door)
That’d be nice.

DOGGETT
And I wouldn’t be worried about
Mr. Follmer making any more
advances towards you. Now that
he knows Monica is here…

They get out and enter the building. Neither one saying a word until they stand outside the apartment door.

SCULLY
I don’t know how to repay you for
what you did for me tonight…

DOGGETT
(runs hand through hair)
Aw… it’s nothing’.

Scully takes out her keys.

SCULLY
Would you like to come in for a drink?

She hears giggling from inside… Monica giggles. Her eyes go wide. Then they both hear Brad state loudly:

FOLLMER (O.S.)
Oh Monica, I’ve waited so long
to hold you in my arms again.

Scully turns back to Doggett wide-eyed.

DOGGETT
I have a better idea, you can
stay at my place for the night.

He puts his arm behind her back and they get out of there as fast as possible. They don’t want to know anymore about Monica and Brad’s night then they already know.

Off the sounds of Doggett’s screeching tires we:

FADE OUT:

THE END.
