FADE IN:

EXT. SOMEWHERE IN VIRGINIA – DAY

FEBRUARY 1, 2012

John Doggett and Knowle Rohrer slowly cross the frozen Virginia landscape. Blizzard conditions limit their visibility, making their short mission to land even more dangerous. Ice and snow fly around them, stinging any exposed skin with numbing pain. The cold wind howls around them, restricting their movement forwards – a sign, perhaps, that this mission should have waited for a better day.

Despite the advice and warning from their wives, the two dedicated Marines strapped their rucksacks to their backs and left the Pequod early this morning.

Knowle stops walking and hollers to John to “hold up a second”. John reluctantly turns to face him. His entire body aches in pain that throbs, burning through his entire body. His feet are frozen and stopping only worsens the feeling. But he waits to hear what Knowle has to say.

KNOWLE
Something’s not right. We should
be there by now.

Knowle’s comment weighs the rucksack on John’s back from forty pounds to eighty. This means this mission just got that much longer.

DOGGETT
(not thrilled)
What do you mean? I thought you
said you could find the cave blind.

KNOWLE
(looking up from compass)
I was speaking figuratively, John. I
know where it is but... we should be
there by now.

Doggett watches as Knowle looks down at his compass with confusion. Knowle shakes his head.

KNOWLE
If it weren’t a blizzard out, I’d
be able to see if we’re going in
the right direction.

DOGGETT
Isn’t that what your compass is for?

KNOWLE
Well yeah, but to double check, you know?

DOGGETT
You double check your compass?

Knowle looks up at him. Doesn’t everyone?

KNOWLE
A compass can break.

DOGGETT
I know, but it’s you, so I just
see it as one of those dorky things
you do and ramble on about.

KNOWLE
Well if you rely solely on a
compass you can end up lost.

DOGGETT
Here you go... talk, talk talk...

KNOWLE
I’m serious John. Never put full faith
in inanimate objects. They break. But
you can always rely on the stars.

Doggett removes his rucksack from his back, sets it on the icy ground and sits on it. Knowle looks at him.

KNOWLE
(confused)
What are you doing?

DOGGETT
Preparing for some kind of lecture.

Doggett waves him on to continue.

KNOWLE
Didn’t your dad ever teach you how
to navigate with the stars?

DOGGETT
Did your’s?

KNOWLE
No, he was too busy beating mom
and I. That’s what libraries are for.

DOGGETT
Are you going to lecture me or not?

KNOWLE
What kind of lecture are you expecting?

DOGGETT
I suppose the words Einstein, the Greeks and
Romans, or North star, time, and probably
celestial navigation would be included. (beat)
Oh, and it would be ending with the phrase:
“that’s why you should never fully rely
on a magnetic compass”.

Knowle looks at him blankly.

DOGGETT
(explaining)
That’s what you do man. You’re
an encyclopedia about everything.
Is there anything you don’t know?

KNOWLE
Does it bother you that much?

DOGGETT
Yes, because it always leads to some
kind of lecture or history lesson on
the origins of human navigation.

Knowle looks pensive.

KNOWLE
You know, our origin as navigators on
this planet dates back before we were
even relying on the stars. We’d rely on
geographical landmarks. (beat) To be able
to navigate through celestial means you
would have to have a pre-Copernican view
of the sky, where the Earth is the unmoving
center and the sun, moon, stars and planets-

DOGGETT
-SHUT UP!

Knowle looks at him, then realizes he did it again.

DOGGETT
How about back to our issue of
“why aren’t we there yet”?

Knowle looks down at his compass and shakes his head. He turns around and the compass needle doesn’t move.

KNOWLE
Shit.

DOGGETT
What?

KNOWLE
Compass isn’t working.

He turns to face Doggett again.

DOGGETT
What does that mean? We’re lost?

KNOWLE
Yeah.

Doggett rolls his eyes out of irritation that this mission is longer than it should be to begin with, and now they are lost.

DOGGETT
I thought you check your compass?

KNOWLE
I did...

He fiddles with it a bit.

KNOWLE
Then Alex came by as I was packing.
Some kind of lotion drama again. I
left to get Monica, came back and-

A magnet falls out of Knowle’s compass. He looks down at the icy ground.

KNOWLE
(realizing)
The little shit put a magnet
in my damn compass. (beat) We’ve
been heading in the wrong direction
the whole damn time!

He turns to Doggett with anger, not at John, but at Alex. Yet much to Knowle’s surprise, Doggett is smiling at him.

KNOWLE
Did you not hear me? We’ve been
heading in the wrong way the whole time.

DOGGETT
(grinning)
I heard you.

KNOWLE
(confused and a little frustrated)
THEN WHY ARE YOU SMILING?!

DOGGETT
Because Mr. Encyclopedia got
had by Alex Krycek, and right
now that kind of humors me.

Knowle looks at him in disbelief.

KNOWLE
Well, I’m so glad you are basking
in the glory of our misery John.
(beat) For cryin’ out loud. We’re
lost and you take the time to be
humored because Krycek got the better
of me-

DOGGETT
(hand to ear, as if he didn’t hear him)
Say that again? I didn’t hear you?

KNOWLE
I said, I’m in disbelief that you
would take the time to be humored
because I got had by Krycek.

DOGGETT
I’m sorry, you were what?

KNOWLE
Had by Krycek!

Doggett shakes his head and chuckles with humor. Knowle wrinkles his nose at him. Now he’s got Doggett making fun of him.

KNOWLE
For cryin’ out loud, John!
Knock it off!

Doggett shakes his head, letting the last of his laughs out.

DOGGETT
Right. So where do we go from here?

KNOWLE
We head towards the south west.
We should find Ray’s cave there.
Not sure how off track we are, but
that’s where we need to go.

Doggett nods and stands up, lugging his rucksack onto his back.

DOGGETT
I guess if we’re looking for a bright
side to all of this it would be that
we can’t be more than twenty-four hours
away since we’ve only been out here for
seven hours – at least.

KNOWLE
Yeah. I mean, we’ve both been through
worse conditions than this.

Doggett stops and Knowle continues on. He’s been through worse conditions than this? Doggett shakes his head, sometimes he feels like he doesn’t even know his friend. He follows after him and catches up.

DOGGETT
So I’ve got to ask... what could
possibly be worse than right now?

KNOWLE
You know my days with special ops.

DOGGETT
Tell me this is the beginning of
an interesting story that doesn’t
involve a heavy lecture.

Knowle smiles.

KNOWLE
I was on this one mission, flyin’
out of Greenland. The nav in my cockpit
malfunctioned, the fuel gage was wrong
and suddenly I find myself losing control
and crashing somewhere over the arctic ocean.
Fortunately I crashed on a large ice sheet, but
for days I was out there alone. Radio dead, and
all I had with me was the hope that my team had
the slightest hunch on where I could be.

DOGGETT
How long were you out there?

KNOWLE
Felt like a week, but I’m not exactly sure.
(beat) Ran out of food. Was tired beyond
belief and had the threat of polar bears
anywhere I went. All I had for shelter was
my cockpit, which was smashed – I was surprised
I even lived through the crash. (beat) But they
taught me how to survive and I did. It was some
of the hardest days of my life.

DOGGETT
How’d they find you?

KNOWLE
Ray did.

He smiles and looks at Doggett.

KNOWLE
Go figure right? He’s crazy enough to
go searching for me out in the middle
of the arctic. He never did tell me
how he found me. I was hospitalized
for a week afterwards. My superiors even
questioned whether I could handle a mission
after what happened. (beat) That starts to mess with
your head too, you know?

DOGGETT
I guess it would. How long where you
with special ops at the time?

They walk a few more steps as Knowle recalls.

KNOWLE
That would’ve been sometime in 2000.
Two years, give or take. (beat) Ray
was my mentor at the time. He kind of
took me under his wing. I guess it shouldn’t
be a shock to me that he found me... he
usually knew I’d be all right the more cocky
I was about a mission, but this particular one,
I was nervous. It was a mission alone with no
backup if something went wrong.

DOGGETT
So Ray figured something happened
when you didn’t return on time and
went searching for you? (beat) Were
you a strong pilot back then?

KNOWLE
Been through all the training, so yeah.

DOGGETT
Guess Ray’s good at hunches. So if
anything were to happen to us, he’d
probably find us, huh?

KNOWLE
Possibly? If he’s not busy picking
his teeth with a knife. (laughs) We
really ought to bring him some dental floss.

DOGGETT
He has some... I just think he likes
to get strange looks and odd dental
lectures from you.

Doggett smiles, then looks to Knowle.

DOGGETT
I’ve gotta ask, because this has been
bugging me for ages.

Knowle looks at him with interest.

KNOWLE
What’s that?

DOGGETT
You majored in just about everything
yet you decided to do special operations.
(beat) I don’t know, I guess knowing you
while we were growing up, it just doesn’t
add up... I mean, yeah, you’re smart and
know as many languages as your brain can
handle, but you could have done anything you wanted.
What made you decided to go with special operations?

KNOWLE
They approached me while I was at Ft. Hood
back in ’94. I thought it sounded like a
good idea. I’d be out of the loop for a while,
which at the time seemed like a great idea.
Shan’ and I weren’t doing so well and life
was pretty crappy. I had an alcohol and drug
problem and figured this would be a great way
to detox and get my life in order.

DOGGETT
Have you ever just done something for
the country or has there always been some
kind of alternative motive?

KNOWLE
I love my country. It’s partly the reason
why I went to boot camp with ya, John. But
I had other worries and problems in my life
to think about. (beat) Sometimes you gotta
do what you gotta do to improve yourself.

DOGGETT
So this restaurant thing? Is that what
you’ve always wanted?

KNOWLE
Yes it is. (beat) You?

DOGGETT
Me, what?

KNOWLE
What’s your dream?

DOGGETT
Sure as hell isn’t living life
on an ice planet and a boat. (beat)
Had things been different, I would have
left the FBI and been a professor of law
at a university. Dana and I would have
been married and started our family where
we don’t live in fear of any attack. Where
Katie could grow up and go to school just
like we did with lunchboxes, recess and all
the good stuff that we had.

KNOWLE
You still have that, John... just without
any summer vacations.

DOGGETT
I would have loved to take her to Disneyland.
Or out to my cabin in Luray, had barbeques and
birthday parties. (beat) And I would have loved
to have my parents meet her. Have her run loose
on the farm and get the chickens are riled up.

Doggett smiles, in a sad way... wishing for the things he cannot have. The life he wants for his little girl, for Dana and for himself.

DOGGETT
(changing topic)
How’s the restaurant coming?

KNOWLE
Mulder and Krycek have been by everyday
to help fix it up after they went nuts.
It’s coming along nicely. I still can’t
believe the crap they pull. Has Katie
seen them since?

DOGGETT
They came to apologize and she made them
play tea party with her... the catch being
that they had to wait on her and Johnny the puppy.

Knowle laughs a bit.

KNOWLE
She really knows how to own them. You
gotta watch her, John. She’s a wild child.

DOGGETT
She’s just full of life.

Knowle suddenly stops, placing his arm in front of John to stop him from walking.

DOGGETT
(quiet)
What?

KNOWLE
(looking around suspiciously)
Something’s wrong.

Doggett turns around to look behind them, thinking that maybe Knowle is sensing that someone else is near by. He sees nothing but snow and ice blowing. Hell, they could be being watched or followed and they wouldn’t even know it. Visibility is shit out here.

DOGGETT
I don’t see anything, Knowle.

KNOWLE
Something’s not right...

Cautiously, Knowle takes a step forward and falls through a crack in the ice and snow. The rest of the ground weakens and starts to cave in after him and Doggett quickly steps back to prevent himself from falling down along with Knowle.

A moment later, the snow and ice has settled and Doggett looks down into the massive crack in the ground and sees Knowle laying on his back down below.

DOGGETT
(yelling down)
You all right?

INT. CRACK IN THE ICE – CON’T

Knowle has fallen on his back and is looking up at the giant crack above him from which he just fell from. His face has been scratched from hitting the ice wall on the way down. He sees Doggett peering down at him, sees his mouth moving, as if he’s talking to him, but Knowle can’t hear him. It’s not that Doggett is too far away, his hearing is a bit impaired from the fall. He starts to feel a bit dizzy, but remains focused.

DOGGETT
(calling down; muffled)
Knowle?

KNOWLE
(hearing his own voice muffled)
I’m all right! Things are kind of
fuzzy and my hearin’s off, but I’m all right!

DOGGETT
I’m gonna get you out of there!
Just hang tight! I’ll be right back!

Doggett disappears from Knowle’s view.

Knowle shuts his eyes, hearing his breathing echo in his head. He’s been through some rough times, but nothing this bad. Well maybe this bad, his mind isn’t thinking clearly. His mind races, and he finds himself panicked and starts to think of the worst-case scenario. What if the Breeders attack and John gets killed? He shakes the thought out of his mind. Stay focused, stay with the situation, don’t allow your mind to drift to the worst-case scenario. John’ll get you out of this. He’s done that before in the war. He’s good on his word. He’ll be back. Just remain calm. Nothing’s broken. No one else is out here and Ray can’t be that far away. He starts to feel pain flow through his body. He accesses it in his mind. Nothing broken. You’re only hurting from the fall. Nothing serious. You’re going to be fine. Just focus. One thing at a time. His vision clears and he can hear the sound of the howling wind above, the sound of the cracking ice and snow around him. At least his vision and hearing are clearing up, he’ll be able to think more clearly then. You’ll get out of this mess. Ray’s probably wondering about you right now.

His mind drifts again... What if this is the end? What will Monica do? Hell, she’s dying, he’ll see her again soon. He shuts his eyes, clearing his mind of the negative thoughts. He has to stop thinking that way. Don’t distract yourself. A distracted Marine is a dead Marine. Don’t fuck up again.

He looks up at the hole he fell through. There’s no way he can get out of there. How the hell will John even get him out? He shuts his eyes, hoping that Monica can tap into his situation, know he’s in trouble and can radio Ray to let him know. There’s no way John can get him out alone. There’s no way. Not in the middle of nowhere with just ice and snow. Don’t underestimate him. He dragged your sorry ass out of that collapsed building with a shattered knee. He can get you out of this.

Doggett re-appears and looks down at Knowle. He tosses a rope down and starts to scale his way into the hole.

KNOWLE
What are you doing?

DOGGETT
Comin’ down to help you.

KNOWLE
And how do you suppose we get
back up? Or find help? You need
to be up there, dammit.

There’s nothing Knowle can do to stop John, he’s already on his feet at the same level as Knowle. He comes over to check him over.

DOGGETT
You really think I’m going to drop a
rope down here and just expect you to
climb up on your own?

KNOWLE
Yeah.

DOGGETT
You’re not thinking clearly. You could
have injuries you don’t know about that
only I can see. (beat; looks him in the eyes)
You’re not moving until I say so. We clear?

KNOWLE
Since when did you become a medical doctor?

DOGGETT
I’ve been this way since the Marines.

Doggett starts to unzip Knowle’s jacket.

DOGGETT
Do you feel any pain in your back, ribs?

KNOWLE
No.

Doggett looks at him doubtful. A fall like that and all he has to show for it is a scratch on his face. Yeah right. He gives him a serious look. Now’s not the time to hide injuries and try to be macho.

KNOWLE
(after a beat)
May have hurt something, but I’m
too damn cold to know what. Kind of
got the wind knocked out of me when
I fell and the dizziness and muffled
hearing and vision worries me.

Doggett nods his head.

DOGGETT
I’ll check you over. Just try to
relax, but I don’t want you to
drift off, so I want you to talk to me.

KNOWLE
Even if it’s a lecture?

Doggett smiles and nods his head.

DOGGETT
Even if it’s a lecture.

KNOWLE
You’re in luck, I’m out of lectures.

DOGGETT
I doubt that.

He gently touches Knowle’s rib cage and Knowle winces.

DOGGETT
May have a fractured rib. I’ll
consider it broken just to be
extra careful.

KNOWLE
That rib’s prone to injury. Broke
it during a training course back
in ’95. Hurt like a bitch and ever
since then, it’s been easy to break.

DOGGETT
Bet you’re wishin’ we had some
Ranger Candy right about now.

KNOWLE
Just a bit.

Oh what he’d do for 800mg of Ibuprofen to dull the pain.

DOGGETT
So when are you an Mon’ gonna have
some kids? Katie’s been asking for
a new friend and cousin.

Knowle looks at him, not wanting to tell him that Monica has cancer and may not live long enough to have children.

KNOWLE
It’s always fun tryin’.

He forces a smile through the pain as Doggett does what he can to help his injuries.

DOGGETT
Remember Roy?

KNOWLE
Roy-Roy The Boy Toy? How could
I forget? First guy to ever crush
on me. (beat) What about him?

DOGGETT
What do you think he’d say
if he saw you now?

KNOWLE
He’d probably want to undress me
just to see me naked.

DOGGETT
That’s obvious. I meant how you’re
a married man.

KNOWLE
He’d probably see it coming.

Knowle smiles and Doggett looks at him.

KNOWLE
Mon’ and I spent a lot of time
together in high school. Did you
know that she would spend many nights
in my room?

DOGGETT
Did she?

KNOWLE
Yeah, I guess she didn’t want to be
with Brad since you and him were roommates.
(beat) It was nice when she’d stay with me.
I wouldn’t wake up the next morning with Roy
cuddling with me naked.

DOGGETT
He always preferred to be naked.

KNOWLE
Unfortunately. You know, I heard
he opened a gay bar in New York City.

DOGGETT
Not shocking.

KNOWLE
Shannon told me about it. Said that
when she was there, she was shocked
there wasn’t a naked hour.

Doggett laughs, then looks at him again.

DOGGETT
(serious)
With your rib how it is, I’m not
sure it’s very safe to move you
or have you climb out of this hole.

KNOWLE
Shit.

DOGGETT
We’ll figure something out. ‘Till then,
I want you to get some food in ya
and get some rest. I want your head to
be thinking straight.

KNOWLE
I thought you wanted me to talk.

DOGGETT
You’re head is fine as far as I can tell.

KNOWLE
I feel fine except for this nagging
pain on my rib. I’ll live. Believe me
I’m not going to let some little fall
take me down.

DOGGETT
Good.

Doggett helps Knowle get more comfortable. He pulls a sleeping bag from the rucksack and places it over Knowle.

KNOWLE
You tuckin’ me into bed?

DOGGETT
I get used to doing that with Katie.

KNOWLE
What about you?

DOGGETT
I can keep my blood moving. (beat)
Just rest up and I’ll try to see if
I can get Ray on the radio.

Knowle nods and shuts his eyes. He feels that his body is more fatigued after the fall. Something like that can take you down, and it’s not like he’s been in top physical training for this stuff like he was back when he was in full swing with special ops.

CUT TO:

EXT. ICE CAVE – LATER THAT DAY

Ray Douglas stands tall. His dark figure is a drastic contrast to the white snow he stands on. He holds binoculars up to his eyes as he scans the surrounding area for Doggett and Knowle. No sign of them. He lowers the binoculars, deep in his own thoughts. Either they are lost or they are struggling with this blizzard.

RAY
(into radio)
White Elephant to Skyscraper.
Do you copy?

He waits, hearing only static coming through the radio. He changes frequency and tries again. And again, nothing but static. He turns to face Roger Thompson, who was on the second wave of men coming to the ice cave on this particular surveillance mission.

ROGER
Nothing yet?

RAY
Something’s wrong. There’s no way
Knowle’d go this far without radio
contact. Something’s happened.

ROGER
You don’t think it’s Breeders, do you?

Ray enters the ice cave and makes his way back to the operations area.

RAY
Breeder country is about twenty or so
clicks from here. There’s no way they’d
be off track that much.

ROGER
You’re so sure?

Ray thinks for a moment... remembering the last contact he had with Knowle before they left the Pequod.

RAY
He was nervous... he’s never nervous.
(beat) He screws up when he’s nervous.

ROGER
I’ll contact Shannon on the Pequod.
See if she’s heard from them. (beat)
It could be that they’re just out of range.

RAY
I don’t like this... they’ve been
gone too long to have gotten lost.
(beat) I’m going to head out there,
see if I can find them.

ROGER
You sure that’s the best idea? (beat)
The temperature is dropping rapidly and
visibility is getting lower and lower.

RAY
I know, and my friend’s out in it. (beat)
Don’t worry about me, worry about finding
them. Low visibility is ideal for Breeders.

Roger watches as Ray gears up to head out there.

ROGER
I came out to warn you that I
got a message from another colony
not too far from here. (beat) They
reported that a group of Breeders
were on the move, heading this way.

Ray listens as he packs weapons into his bag.

ROGER
Now it’s not likely that they are
heading here, they don’t know this
place exists, but be careful.

RAY
I will. And just because we think they
don’t know about this place, doesn’t mean
that’s fact. Who’s to say they haven’t been
laying low, watching us, learning our ways
and planning an attack? Just like we do to them.

ROGER
Isn’t Furiae an attack on the brain?

Ray nods.

ROGER
The Breeders living out here, have
been here a while, wouldn’t it be
impossible for them to think strategically?

RAY
That’s where it gets fuzzy with me too.
(beat) You see, they’ve managed to survive
through the heat, the cold, and the freezing
ass ice just as long as we have. Yet because
they are rabid, kill, rape and cannibalize we
just assume their brains don’t function. (beat)
They live together. They attack together. (beat)
Wouldn’t that mean they think and use their noggins?

ROGER
You should talk to Dr. Doggett about that.

RAY
Probably should. She’s the one working
on Skinner. (beat) I hear he’s nearing
stage three now.

Roger shakes his head.

ROGER
No sense in keeping him alive like
that if you ask me. Isn’t that the
stage where violence is prominent?

RAY
Not sure exactly how the stages work...
(beat; changing subject) Anyway... I’m more
concerned for Knowle and John. They are out
there with nothing. (beat; more to himself)
Something’s happened to them...

ROGER
I’ll be by the radio if you
need anything.

Ray nods his head at him, and turns towards the Snow Trac. Roger watches him leave, still unsure if letting him go alone is the best thing, but someone’s got to stay here in case John and Knowle come.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. ICE CRACK – THAT NIGHT

Doggett strikes a match and gets a small fire going so he can melt snow for drinking water. Knowle watches him, wrapped in many blankets and coats to keep him warm as he is still unable to move from his injuries. Doggett sacrificed his jacket for Knowle’s warmth, and is only in a snowsuit with gloves and a small knit hat. Doggett looks up and smiles at him.

DOGGETT
It’s a good thing for matches, huh?

Knowle doesn’t respond, his mind is elsewhere.

DOGGETT
Once we get this fire hot enough
we should be able to heat this place
a little bit more. (beat) We’ll be out
of here in no time. I’m sure they’ll
be organizing a rescue party at first light.

KNOWLE
Did you ever get Ray on the radio?

DOGGETT
Not yet, not sure if he’s in range.
Could be too much blocking the signal
down in this cave.

KNOWLE
Sorry I got us so off track.

DOGGETT
No need to apologize, man, could
have happened to anyone. Besides,
we were both heading the wrong way
and were okay with that for many miles.

Doggett smiles at him, trying his best to be optimistic about the situation. Knowle on the other hand isn’t as chipper as John is trying to be.

KNOWLE
You think we’ll get out of here?
Think they’ll find us?

DOGGETT
Of course they will. Dana’ll
give ‘em hell if they don’t.

KNOWLE
I imagine Katie will too.

Doggett smiles. His daughter is feisty.

KNOWLE
I just hope we’re back by Friday.

DOGGETT
What’s happening then?

KNOWLE
Trade ship, the Blue Dawn, is expected
to arrive and they’ve got some supplies
I need for my restaurant.

Doggett nods his head.

DOGGETT
Like what?

KNOWLE
Spices and other stuff. They come out
of Europe so they’ve got some pretty
damn good chocolate.

DOGGETT
We’ll be back by then. Just
keep hanging in there.

KNOWLE
Also talked with a guy on board
that’s got some books I want.

DOGGETT
Already read through the library, huh?

KNOWLE
Sure did. I love reading. I fear the day
I’ve read all the books and there will
be nothing left for me to read.

DOGGETT
So start writing your own books.

KNOWLE
What would I have to write about?

Doggett gives him a look. Is he serious?

DOGGETT
Maybe all those lectures you give.

Doggett smirks at him in a humorous way.

KNOWLE
(sarcastic)
Yeah, that’d be entertaining. As if
hearing my ramblings wasn’t boring enough
imagine reading them.

DOGGETT
So you admit you bore people?

KNOWLE
Who really cares about celestial navigation?

DOGGETT
Someone might. (beat) You did.
(beat) Dana would... her dad...
Charles, and because everyone else
would be interested... Katie would.
(beat) Then Mulder and Krycek because
Katie would start out smarting them...

Doggett brings some water over to Knowle and helps him drink.

KNOWLE
Thanks.

Doggett nods, then moves to sit across from him.

KNOWLE
Have you ever thought about how
you’re going to die?

Doggett looks at him, not sure why he’s talking about dying. This worries him.

DOGGETT
(worried)
You doin’ all right, Knowle?

KNOWLE (CON’T)
I try not to think about it. But
I always figured that when I die
I’d be content and feel at peace.
(beat) Truth be told, I’m afraid to die.

DOGGETT
It’s a natural part of life.

KNOWLE
I know, which is why it is such
an irrational fear and I don’t
understand why I have it. (beat)
But what I fear more is dying last.

DOGGETT
Don’t know if this will be a comfort,
but men typically are the first to go.

KNOWLE
(off in his own thoughts)
Typically, but not always. (beat) How
did you deal with it... knowing that
Dana was dying of cancer and there
was nothing you could do to help her?

Doggett watches him for a moment, not sure why he’s talking about this.

DOGGETT
I loved her, protected her. (beat) I
probably could have been a little more
trusting than I was with others... but
I just wanted her to be comfortable and
I wanted her to know that I love her.

Knowle hasn’t looked Doggett in the eye since bringing up the topic. Doggett watches as he wipes a tear away from his eye.

DOGGETT
(worried)
Knowle?

KNOWLE
My biggest fear is losing her. My
biggest regret was not telling her
earlier how much I love her, that
I was serious when I asked her to
give up the FBI and be with me. I
hate that so much time was wasted
because I was afraid.

DOGGETT
(worried)
You all right?

KNOWLE (CON’T)
(in his own thoughts)
It’s not my own death I fear, it’s her’s.

DOGGETT
(reassuring him)
Monica’s fine Knowle. She’s safe
on the Pequod.

Knowle looks over at him. He doesn’t want to tell him she is going to die of the cancer Scully had. It would shatter him. Doggett and Scully have been so happy and thankful for what Monica did for them. It would break their hearts to know that she is dying because she took the cancer away from Scully and now holds it within herself.

KNOWLE
(changing his tone)
Maybe the cold is getting to me. We’ve
been out here too damn long. Ray should
have found us by now. They should have
found us by now.

Doggett listens to him, determined to get them out of this situation.

DOGGETT
I want you to get some sleep. I’ll
figure out how to get us out of here.

Without argument Knowle shuts his eyes. The cold and the fall he took have taken the strength right out of him. There isn’t much he can do to help.

And as the sights and sounds of the world fade out as he drifts off to sleep, we...

FADE OUT:

FADE IN:

INT. ICE CRACK – MORNING

FEBRUARY 2, 2012
THE NEXT MORNING

BAM!

Knowle’s eyes open abruptly at the loudness of a hammer pounding away at something. He looks around and sees Doggett. He is making a makeshift stretcher and securely attaching rope to all sides.

KNOWLE
(exhausted)
What are you doing?

DOGGETT
It’s Thursday. Tomorrow is Friday and
I’m getting us out of here so you can
meet that trade ship in good time.

He smiles at him.

KNOWLE
(not thrilled)
You gonna make me get on that
stretcher and drag me up?

DOGGETT
Damn straight.

Doggett tosses the hammer to the ground and catches his breath.

DOGGETT
While you were sleepin’ last night
I started making a way out of here.
It’s made of solid ice, but we can
make it and I’ll drag ya.

KNOWLE
I hate bein’ useless.

DOGGETT
You’re not useless, you’re just injured.
(beat) And when we get back, you can have
Monica heal you up just fine, huh?

KNOWLE
No need for that. I’d rather not have her
waste her energy on a broken bone that’ll
heal eventually. (beat) I’ll just get patched
up by the doc or something.

DOGGETT
(questioning)
Or “something”? You mean yourself?

Knowle shrugs as Doggett drags the stretcher over to him.

DOGGETT
We’re getting out of here. The sun is
shining and we’ll be back before you
can say “Blue Dawn”.

KNOWLE
Blue Dawn.

Doggett smiles at him and shakes his head as he helps Knowle onto the stretcher. Knowle grits his teeth as the pain radiates throughout his entire body. Once on, Doggett helps to strap him in.

DOGGETT
Just think of the bright side to
all of this. You’ll get some R&R
after today because the Captain
will order you to get healthy again.

KNOWLE
What I wouldn’t do to retire from
all of this. Just run the restaurant
and be content without having to worry.

DOGGETT
No kidding, but things didn’t turn out
that way. (beat) Now try not to move
and hold on... this is an uphill climb
on and icy incline.

Knowle hangs on tightly as Doggett starts to drag him across the bumpy surface and on their way out of the cave.

CUT TO:

INT. THE PEQUOD – CLASSROOM – DAY

All the kids are lining up at the door for their field trip to the Navigation Bridge. Katie Doggett stands in the front of one line, holding on to the hand of the girl next to her. She’s beaming with delight that she gets to see her granddaddy during school hours.

Alexandra McCord is at the front of the line, making sure everyone has a buddy as they head off on their field trip. Monica is at the back of the line, making sure no one trails behind.

Robert Comer appears in the doorway just as the line of kids is about to head out. Alexandra smiles at him.

ALEXANDRA
Hey Robert, are you going to tag
along on our field trip to the Navigation Bridge?

COMER
I can’t today. I’m actually here to
talk to Ms. Monica.

KATIE
(proud)
She’s my auntie you know!

Katie smiles up at him and he smiles down at her.

MONICA
Alex, head on up, I’ll be right behind you.

ALEXANDRA
All right. Everyone holding the hand
of their buddy?

All the kids hold up their hands to show that they are buddied up. They move out, making their way to the Navigation Bridge to learn all about what happens on an aircraft carrier.

Robert enters the classroom and approaches Monica. She smiles at him.

MONICA
(cheerful)
What’s up?

COMER
(quietly)
I have some bad news...

MONICA
(more serious)
What?

COMER
It’s about Knowle... I just over heard
that Ray Douglas hasn’t seen or heard
from him and John Doggett.

MONICA
How could that be? They should have
been there yesterday afternoon.

COMER
I know.

MONICA
What are they doing about this?

COMER
Well I’m not sure, but I do know that
Dana Doggett has been on top of this
since early this morning when she found
out. (beat) Now don’t take my word on
it, but I do believe they are planning a
rescue mission sometime later today. (beat)
I thought I’d come tell you incase maybe you
sensed something or felt something with your ability.

Monica blinks and looks at him, as if she’s not sure what he is talking about.

MONICA
(a little confused)
Sensed something with my ability?

Comer looks at her, did she not hear him?

COMER
Yeah... your husband?

MONICA
(confused)
Knowle? What about him?

Comer observes her for a moment, a little worried that she doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

COMER
(concerned)
Moni, are you all right?

He moves in and puts his arm around her shoulder.

MONICA
What are you doing?

She quickly moves away from him, unsure if he is making a move on her or not. Comer moves away from her, and now he’s the confused one.

MONICA
Why are you here?

COMER
Your husband, Knowle... he’s missing?
(beat) Monica, are you all right?

MONICA
I’m fine. Why?

COMER
You seemed to have forgotten what
it was that I was telling you.

Monica doesn’t respond right away, as she starts to feel a throbbing pain in her head.

MONICA
I have to go, I have a field trip-

She quickly moves by him and out the door. She feels her nose start to bleed and she quickly finds a restroom.

INT. RESTROOM – CON’T

Monica rushes in and grabs a tissue to stop the blood from trickling from her nose. She washes up and looks at herself in the mirror, unsure of what she is feeling. It’s only been two months since the nosebleeds started and the cancer growth was found and she hasn’t even come to terms with the inevitable – her certain death. There are so many things she wants to do but can never. Starting a family for one thing. She shuts her eyes, knowing that she has entered the next stage of the cancer’s progression: temporary short-term memory loss. She can’t even recall the conversation she had with Robert Comer.

Her mind drifts back to when Scully had this cancer... short-term memory loss was the beginning of the worst of it, and now she is there. A tear rolls down her cheek.

SHANNON
Are you all right, Monica?

Monica opens her eyes, startled, and looks in the mirror. Shannon stands behind her. How long has she been there?

MONICA
Hey Shan’. Didn’t know you were in here.

Shannon comes up to her as she wipes a tear from her eye.

SHANNON
You don’t look so good.

MONICA
It’s nothing.

SHANNON
“It” always tends to be something.
(beat) What’s up?

MONICA
I don’t know... I think I’m
just having one of those hard days.

SHANNON
Because of Knowle?

Monica looks up at her, vaguely remembering Comer telling her something happened with Knowle and John.

MONICA
What about Knowle?

SHANNON
Heard from Ray at the Ice Cave...
He hasn’t seen or heard from Knowle
and John yet. (beat) Not sure what
that means, but I thought you would
want to know.

MONICA
They should have been there by now.

SHANNON
I know. (beat) I don’t want you to
worry too much, weather was shit. I’m
sure they are just being extra careful.

Monica nods her head and Shannon starts to head towards the door.

SHANNON
But maybe if you have a chance you could
use that Jedi-like sensing power of your’s
to see if everything’s all right.

MONICA
You’ve spent too much time with
Mulder and Krycek, haven’t you?

SHANNON
You know how the Captain sentenced
them to one week of isolation away
from each other...

Monica nods.

SHANNON (CON’T)
Well, apparently, even when they can’t
see or hear each other they can quote
the entire “Star Wars” saga from start
to finish at the same time. (beat) It’s
kind of creepy in it’s own way, yet
fascinating all at the same time.

MONICA
You mean even though they are in separate
rooms they are saying it together?

SHANNON
Now I know why they call Mulder “Spooky”,
but I’m not sure why they call Krycek “Da Man”.
(beat) Anyway... we’re planning a rescue mission,
so if you want to head down to the Ready Room with
any sensing or feeling you may have, they’d love to hear it.

Shannon starts to walk away.

SHANNON
I’ll see ya later, Mon.

Shannon leaves the restroom. And Monica shakes her head, Mulder and Krycek are so strange. She stops her thoughts suddenly realizing something... Krycek snuck out of his isolation the other morning before Knowle left...

MONICA
(to herself)
That’s not right...

She hurries out of the restroom and goes to the nearest intercom system. She calls to the Navigation Bridge.

CAPTAIN SCULLY (FILTERED)
Navigation Bridge, this is Captain Scully.

MONICA
Captain, it’s Monica Rohrer.

CAPTAIN SCULLY (FILTERED)
Yes ma’am?

MONICA
Ms. McCord is on her way up with
the class field trip, when she gets
there can you let her know that I
won’t be there and not to worry. Something
came up that I need to tend to.

CAPTAIN SCULLY (FILTERED)
Is this about your husband?

MONICA
(not very happy)
Very well could be.

She thinks of Krycek and how he shouldn’t have been out of isolation.

CAPTAIN SCULLY (FILTERED)
All right, I’ll let her know. (beat)
And don’t worry about Knowle, we’ll find him.

MONICA
Thank you.

She hangs up and starts to make her way down to the brig. She’ll have to interrogate that little up-to-no-good twerp.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. SOMEWHERE IN VIRGINIA – DAY

The sun shines blindingly bright across the white snow, as John Doggett trudges in the deep snow. He drags Knowle on his makeshift stretcher. Despite the freezing cold temperature, Doggett has broken out into a little sweat. He stops to catch his breath, wondering just how much his friend weighs.

KNOWLE
Try not to sweat John, you’ll freeze.

DOGGETT
How much do you weigh?

Doggett looks down at him and takes his shades off, wiping sweat from his forehead.

KNOWLE
Eat some snow, it’ll cool you down.

Doggett doesn’t respond, his eyes focus in the distance behind them. He squints his eyes, seeing something moving. Knowle follows his gaze and sees what he sees.

DOGGETT
Is that... what is that?

KNOWLE
Looks like some people.

Doggett drops the rope from his hands and walks back to “get a better look”. He pulls out miniature binoculars and holds them up to his eyes.

DOGGETT
(panic)
Holy shit!

Knowle sits up, despite the pain his rib is causing him.

DOGGETT
It’s Breeders. We have to get
out of here.

KNOWLE
(trying to remain calm)
Are they coming this way?

DOGGETT
Yeah, a whole group of them. Not that
it would take a large group to take us out.

Knowle pulls a gun out of his rucksack and tosses it to John, then pulls a second one and checks to make sure that it is loaded. He fights the pain and stands to his feet, looks around and sees that there is nowhere to hide.

KNOWLE
Shit.

DOGGETT
(remaining calm and focused)
We have time to dig a
hiding place in the snow.
If we work fast enough, we can
do it. They have to be about a
mile and a half away.

Knowle nods his head and the two men get to work digging a hide out into the snow.

SMALL TIME CUT:

EXT. SOMEWHERE IN VIRGINIA – SNOW HIDEOUT – DAY

Doggett and Knowle lay flat on the ground, guns ready to fire as they look through a small opening in the snow trench they dug out to hide from the Breeders. They remain still and silent as they hear the snow crunch beneath the running boots of the Breeders. They hear a man scream, and then a streak of fresh, red blood splats on the ground in front of them.

Doggett and Knowle share a look. Do they make themselves known, or is this person already done for?

Doggett looks out the best he can while remaining hidden from view and sees a man – one of the Breeders – savagely rip another man’s arm off, tossing it to the ground. He quickly looks away, not wanting to see any more, but still remaining alert enough to be ready to fight if they are discovered.

He looks at Knowle and shakes his head. There is nothing they can do for the man without getting themselves killed. Knowle’s expression says it all, he’s unhappy with this situation, but he’s in no condition to risk his life to save another. He’d be taken down instantly.

They remain hidden for a few more minutes as they hear the savage feast right outside their protective hide out. They smell the raw flesh and the iron in the blood. The snow outside is stained with red and there’s nothing they can do to help or stop this from happening. They can only hope that these savage beings aren’t hungry for more after they are done.

Doggett’s mind rushes to Dana. She’s working on Skinner who has been infected with this maddening virus. This is what Skinner will become and there is no foreseen hope for him to get better.

KNOWLE
(hushed whisper)
How many?

Doggett holds up seven fingers. Seven Breeders and two of them. The odds are not in their favor.

CUT TO:

INT. PEQUOD – THE READY ROOM – DAY

Dana and her brother, Charles, are looking at rescue plans at the front of the Ready Room. Fighter pilots are seated, waiting their instructions on the rescue mission.

SCULLY
No, Charles, I think the plans are
off. Monica got it out of Krycek that
he messed up their compass and Ray hasn’t
seen any sign of them at all. They’re
nowhere near this area. They can’t be. It’s
too far south of where they could be. I’ve
just got this feeling that they went more north
than they should have.

CHARLES
What are you basing that off of? A hunch?

SCULLY
A feeling. I just feel that that’s what
happened. C’mon, Chuck, I’m married to
the man, I know when he’s sad, I know
when he’s mad, and I can feel when something
is wrong. How do you supposed we found out
so soon after they left that they were missing.
(beat) Because of me, and Ray confirmed my hunch.

Charles looks at her. She has a point, but still, they are going off of very little and it’s not like it’s easy to go on rescue missions.

CHARLES
Yeah, well the Captain says this is
what he thinks happened so we have to
send some people that way. Not just
target in on one area.

Scully rolls her eyes and sits down at the front desk, allowing Charles to have the floor.

CHARLES
(authoritative)
All right, listen up! This is
what we’re going to do. Unit A
you head south just like what’s on
these plans.

He hands out the plans to Unit A.

CHARLES
Unit B, you head more inland and
search for them in the west. (beat)
And I’ll be Unit C heading north
of the Ice Cave. Any questions?

He waits a small beat and no one has any questions.

CHARLES
All right. Let’s MOVE!

The ready room clears out as all the men leave to get this rescue mission underway. Scully looks up at Charles.

SCULLY
You’re going alone?

CHARLES
I work best that way, you know that.
And if you’ve got a feeling they’re
north of the Ice Cave and way off track
somewhere around there, then I’ll find ‘em.

SCULLY
I think you need back up. (beat)
I’ll come with you.

CHARLES
No you won’t. Katie needs you,
plus you’ve got work on Skinner
that needs to be done.

SCULLY
He’s my husband, Charles.

CHARLES
And you’re my sister, mother to my
niece. We’re not arguing this, this
is military and you are not.

SCULLY
(defensive)
I get saluted.

CHARLES
You’re not military. You have a problem
with this, take it up with dad.

He makes his way out of the Ready Room and Scully watches. She hates feeling useless, it’s not in her nature to just sit by and watch others do all they can to help. It’s why she studied medicine and why she joined the FBI.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. SOMEWHERE IN VIRGINIA – NORTH OF RAY’S ICE CAVE – NIGHT

Charles Scully is in the Snow Trac, trying his best to find Doggett and Knowle in the dead of night. With only the moonlight to guide him, there isn’t much he can see. At least the blizzard has stopped so visibility isn’t low like it was yesterday.

He stops and sits quietly in the Snow Trac, listening to the sounds of the world. Something is off, something has happened. He pulls out night vision goggles and scans the area. He stops on a black spot in the white snow. Blackness that can only be the blood of a human being. He swallows a lump in his throat and exits the vehicle.

Cautiously he makes his way to the blood, checking all around him as he walks. From the looks of this, it had to have been a Breeder attack and he hopes that John and Knowle didn’t get in the middle of it.

As he approaches he can see the remains of a man. There isn’t much left. A finger with a gold wedding band on the ring finger. This could either be John or Knowle. His heart sinks, yet he remains hopeful. The last thing he wants to do is return to the Pequod with bad news for his sister or Monica.

He kneels down next to it and picks it up, looks at the engraving on the ring. It doesn’t belong to either John or Knowle. He lets out a relieved sigh, just as he feels the cool steel of a gun barrel press against the base of his neck.

DOGGETT
Who are you?

It’s John Doggett, and he’s on edge. Charles senses this. He cautiously turns around with his hands in the air.

CHARLES
It’s me. It’s Charles.

Doggett lowers his gun.

CHARLES
You all right, John? What
happened here?

DOGGETT
Breeder attack on a man. Knowle
and I stayed low and they never found us.

CHARLES
Where’s Knowle?

DOGGETT
He’s over here.

Doggett leads Charles behind a small dune of snow to where Knowle is laying down.

CHARLES
What happened?

KNOWLE
Ah you know... the usual. Took
a wrong step and fell down a crack.
Broke my rib. (beat) Nothing to worry about.

Knowle is obviously in great pain. Charles nods his head, catching on to his sarcasm.

CHARLES
All right then, let’s get him
into the Snow Trac and back to
the cave. (beat) I’m sure Ray’ll
be thrilled to patch you up, buddy.

KNOWLE
(sarcastic)
Oh yeah, I’m sure. (beat) He’ll
probably make it more painful than
it should be.

Doggett smiles as he and Charles lift Knowle in the make shift stretcher and carry him over to the Snow Trac.

CUT TO:

INT. MESS HALL – THE PEQUOD – NIGHT

Almost everyone has gathered around one table to welcome Doggett and Knowle back to the Pequod after their trip went south. Katie sits on her dad’s lap and Knowle sits across the table from them. Scully and Monica come back to the table with trays of food.

Scully sets the tray in front of John and his eyes light up.

DOGGETT
Thank you.

Scully leans down and kisses John on the top of his head.

KATIE
So you really ran into walls, uncle Knowle?

Knowle smiles and nods his head as he places his napkin on his lap. They decided to tell Katie that Knowle is hurt because he ran into walls. They didn’t want her to worry too much about the danger her dad was facing while off the boat.

KNOWLE
I sure did.

KATIE
That’s awfully silly of you.

She laughs at the thought of her uncle Knowle ramming himself into walls.

Monica looks at him with slight confusion.

MONICA
You did that running into a wall?

Knowle looks at her, sensing how sincere she is about her comment and her confusion. They went over this with her in the room. They all agreed to tell Katie that he did that rather than what really happened. Knowle nods his head and he tears a piece of bread to eat.

KNOWLE
(a little confused)
Yeah...

Monica smiles and shakes her head.

MONICA
Were you running? Because it seems
like you got banged up pretty badly.

She gently touches his face where a bandage is covering his bad scratch.

MONICA
And how did you hurt your rib?

Her questions and sincere confusion have been noticed by Doggett and Scully now. Is she serious? They thought the whole plan was not to bring attention to Knowle’s bad wounds in front of Katie.

KNOWLE
Remember Monica? I was running down
the stairs and lost my footing?

Monica looks at him. Now she’s really confused.

MONICA
When did this happen?

Knowle leans into her.

KNOWLE
(whispers)
Sweetheart, are you all right?

MONICA
Why?

KNOWLE
(whispers)
Because we went over why we’re
telling Katie I’m a klutz. We
don’t want her to know that John
and I got into some trouble while
we were out on our mission to the ice cave.

Monica looks at him for a moment. Trying her best to recall that conversation.

MONICA
(whispers; leaning in closer)
I don’t remember having that
conversation at all.

She looks at him with worry. She remembers she has cancer and what will happen to her. This is memory loss, another stage. Knowle senses her worry, and his worry grows for her.

He forces a smile and kisses her on the forehead.

KNOWLE
It’s all right, sweetheart.

He says this knowing that everything will not be all right, but he wants to comfort her the best he can. How much longer will she have? How much longer can they hide this from the others? What will happen when the illness becomes too much?

CUT TO:

INT. LABORATORY – HOLDING ROOM – THE NEXT DAY

Security guards enter the room where Skinner is being held. Light restraints hold him to his bed. He eyes them with a blank expression. The guards, having gotten used to transporting him to other areas of the medical ward, talk casually with one another.

SECURITY GUARD #1
Yeah, that Spooky guy is some trip.

SECURITY GUARD #2
So is it really true? They quote
“Star Wars” at the same time?

SECURITY GUARD #1
Was down there myself when it started
happening. Strange thing is, they were
on opposite sides of the brig. So it’s
not like they could tap on the wall so
the other would know to start.

Security Guard #2 shakes his head in disbelief.

SECURITY GUARD #2
I guess that’s why they call him “Spooky”.

They start to move Skinner out of his room.

SECURITY GUARD #1
I also heard rumors that he’s
been re-building his office-

The guard is cut off abruptly when Skinner grabs hold of his neck, squeezing it until the guard can no longer breathe.

The second guard’s jaw drops. This was unexpected!

Skinner drops the first guard and looks at the second one, breaking free of his restraints. He attacks the guard savagely, bashing his head into the wall, killing him!

CUT TO:

INT. LABORATORY – CON’T

Scully and Montgomery share a look, having heard the commotion in the hallway. Her eyes widen as she realizes that it’s Skinner.

SCULLY
Walter!

She starts to run to the door, but Montgomery blocks her, he’d rather see to this himself. He shakes his head and grabs a tranquilizer gun and leaves the room. Scully watches from behind as Montgomery takes down Skinner. He looks up at her.

MONTGOMERY
He’s killed the guards. (beat)
We have to get him off this ship.

Scully leaves the laboratory and enters the hallway.

SCULLY
We can’t give up on him. All we
need is a little more time.

MONTGOMERY
We don’t have time, Dana.

SCULLY
He’s our friend, John-

MONTGOMERY
And he’s killed two people.

SCULLY
He’s staying here. The only way
to help him is to keep him here
with us. (beat) We’re close on this
one John. If we give up now...

She shakes her head. She can feel how close they are to getting a vaccine. She can taste it.

MONTGOMERY
We’ll see what the Captain says.

Scully stands strong in her belief. She cocks her eyebrow, the ace up her sleeve. Her father will listen to her.

SCULLY
(determined)
I’ll talk to him myself.

Scully turns to discuss this matter with her father, leaving Montgomery in the hallway as more guards arrive to help with the situation.

Off Scully’s determination, we...

FADE OUT:

THE END.
